It's not volunteers I need, it's a student who wants to do a project
on it. I want to fit microphones into the surface of a helmet and run
it in a tunnel to look at the aerodynamics and noise. It's actually
very similar to the problem of noise inside aircraft cockpits, which
is one reason I'd like to look at it. The problem is that I've offered
it twice as a project and no student wants it.
    The pictures are here:

Very roughly, the interesting bit was just how effective or
ineffective windscreens can be (size seems to have little to do with
    it).

I'm banned from doing that sort of thing again, because people were
offended by the smell of burning rapeseed oil. Funnily enough.

Semi-seriously. We're certainly never using rape oil again in that
    tunnel.

    Nice one - cheers Mick.
Style over substance, eh? Where have we heard that before?

Same lid as mine. I *have* to wear plugs with it on anything other than very
    short journeys!

  11. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Dave Swindell
**** me, something we agree on.

I now wish I'd worn earplugs for all the miles I'd done; by the time I
started wearing them it was almost too late. I've suffered more than
just age-related hearing loss, but fortunately have retained enough to
    still enjoy music.

  12. Schuberth S1, probably the quietest helmet on the market - but even so
I still use ear plugs and have done so since 1979; graduating from the
EAR visco-elastic foam types to custom-made silicon plugs four years
ago. On hot and or humid days I found that the EAR types would lose
their "recovery" and would fail to seal in the ear canal. No such
    problems with the silicon types.

Ergo; NO helmet is "quiet", it is just that some are "quieter" than
    others.

20 miles? I use them everywhere, even bimbling into town at lunchtime.
Works on the road, too. I also use them for DIY - hammering, drilling,
using the chop-saw or the belt sander, all that noisy shit. It's not just
the "protecting the hearing" bit: it also makes things that much less
wearing. Snoring, noisy cars, clubbing etc - anywhere that's excessively
    noisy, I'll wear them.

Nothing much worth hitting on a trawler. I'd find myself going up on deck
with a nine iron and a big box of hamsters...
