Quick Question

    There's a shim removal tool on EBay that is being listed as for use with
    Triumph T3 engines. Do you need a specific tool for the engine your working
    on? And how do you use these things anyway?

    Big screwdriver, bent pliers, magnetonnastick. Lump of 1/4 plate to
    molish levers out of, clamps, cramps and pingfuckits.
    ... it doesn't make much sense without the gestures.

    Indeed, one of those made me take the exhaust and sump off my Bandit, to
    look for it. In the end, after the 2nd day of searching, it turned up
    lodged near an exhaust valve spring.

    I have been forced to clear out a garage by a pingfuckit, or maybe it
    was a whereditgo (I think the manual referred to it as a vofahrt)

    Not sure what a T3 engine is, exactly.

    There are at least two types of shim tool for Trumfs - one is a sort of
    C-spanner that holds down the bucket while you hoick out the shim from
    under the cam lobe, and the other is a sort of clamp affair that does
    the same task. You unbolt one of the cam caps and bolt this thing in
    place instead.

    The C-spanners for the early engines don't fit the later ones. This I
    know because I too bought one on Ebay, found it didn't fit, and
    promptly re-auctioned it again (taking care to point out it was for
    early engines only!)

    Answer - they aren't entirely necessary, but like all special tools,
    they make the job easier. For instance, when we discovered the
    C-spanner didn't fit my mate and I (we were having a shim-fest on his
    Thunderbird and my Trophy) simply removed the cams on his T-bird and
    accessed the shims that way (my Trophy didn't need any shims changing).

    That took slightly longer, obviously, but then Carl Rosner's mechanics
    say that they tend to do it that way anyway, if the bike needs more
    than a couple of shims changing, because it's easier and quicker to
    pull the cams than to remove a cap, bolt down the tool, change the
    shim, move onto another cap, repeat, etc etc.

    T3 engined Triumphs are the earlier 3-cylinder engined Hinckley bikes
    (from roughly 1992 to 1997), as opposed to the T5 engined bikes that
    started with the T595 Daytona and T509 Speed Triple in 1997, and then
    the updated Sprint and Tiger models over the next couple of years.

    In other words, all the 900cc triples excep the short lived T509
    model - as T5's are 955cc with the exception of the T509.

    I don't think anyone except those on Triumph related fora uses the
    term T3 - it's a handy term for describing bikes from a modular range
    that is less clumsy than say "RSV engined" to describe 1000cc V-twin
    Aprilias. (RSV, Tuono, Caponord, Futura)

    AOL. It's certainly six of one and half a dozen of the other if you've
    got most of the shims requiring replacement. I did it using the tool
    when I needed to change _every_ shim, and as I also needed to find out
    the size of the installed shim to know what size to get, it took
    _ages_. You'll need to factor in the cost of a couple of gaskets if
    you pull the cams. Mine's a T5, which uses a similar clamp affair
    (into the top of the caps though), but is similar to some T3's.

    They're not you know - at least not across all models. The pre-98
    Tiger's a T4, 1999-on Tigers are T7.

    Thank **** for that. :) At least you found it, if it had been a more
    obscure bit, not usually available to order, or really small and
    expensive, it would have gone missing.

    I had the same sort of thing on an engine rebuild of a DT50MX. I'd just
    got the thing together, with new con rod, crank pin, piston, bore,
    gearbox bearings, main bearings, seals, gaskets, reeds.... It started,
    but wouldn't engage 1st gear, coz I'd left out a tiny little top had
    shaped washer. Doh.
