    Hi.

Just been in Sainsburys (£120! FFS!) and saw some cheap DVD gear.
Players were £39 and recorders (I DO fancy one of these) were just
£199. Think the brand name was Rocco if my grey cell isn't making
stuff up, but I know these type of brands are usually other stuff
    rebadged.

Just wondered if you knew of them and would they be worth buying. Too
expensive for the model? Known problems? Worth waiting until the new
year sales to get same/similar cheaper still?

OK, thanks for any info you may throw about. And have a very happy
    Christmas.

    Mico.

Don't know much about the player - but the recorder is a cut-down
    Philips DVDR70.
DVD players seem to have bottomed out at £35-£40 now. Can't think of
anything that we're doing cheaper in the January sale. If I was looking
for a cheap player, I'd go for a slightly more expensive one, though -
look at www.area450.com - the Sampo chipset if _very_ good, so try and
get one of the Sampo-based players.

In terms of a recorder - I wouldn't buy the Mico, as it's had some
features lopped off it. The DVDR70 is a much nicer machine for an extra
    £30 from Richer Sounds.

The only thing I can't find out about it is Firewire. Some people seem
to suggest the Mico has Firewire (iLink), and I know the Philips
    doesn't.

This is important if you have a miniDV camera - it means you can easily
copy / edit camcorder footage onto DVD.

If the Mico _does_ have Firewire, then it's worth it. If not, then the
    Philips is a better bet.

Personally, though, I wouldn't buy without Firewire even if I didn't
have a DV camcorder. It's just more future-proof, and, ISTR, will let
you link to the PC for making DVDs, too.
    And to you, too.

I’m still mighty pleased with my TYT (SCAN 2000) player 2 and a half
years in, though if I was replacing it I’d go with one of the kiss ones
    that will play DIVX/mpeg4.
