This simpit was a bit of an exercise in recycling - I've only got about
$800 invested in it. "Eye candy" is fairly low on my requirements list,
as I'm primarily after a sim with a high-fidelity flight model that will
give a decent framerate on old hardware like this. I've just bought a set
of cheap Nvidia 8400 cards and now I'm enjoying 60fps.

Ah, OK, that was my conclusion, too.

When I was trying it I had a couple of LCD screens and a couple of old
CRT monitors.... couldn't get any within cooee of one another.

I'm not too keen on throwing bulk money at the thing either, but I'm
much more interested in the "eye candy" stuff.

60fps! I don't think I have ever seen more than about 26 or 28, not
that it matters to me too much since I'm just quietly cruising around
looking at the scenery.

It depends on what you're wanting to do. I'm spending an hour or so per
session on takeoff/landing practice using a fairly sparsely drawn airport
(Half Moon Bay, KHAF). I've found that landings are made a bit easier
with a nice smooth framerate.
