question about long trips

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by David Allen Trimm, Jun 25, 2004.

  1. I took a ride from San Diego, CA to Quartzsite, AZ, and then to Parker, AZ
all in the same day. On my way back, more than half way, I experienced a
nose bleed that lasted for about 2.5 hrs. I had a full face helmet to go
out there, but had a half shell - open face for the way back. Was this
bloody nose caused by the helmet being open and wind entering my nose or
something else. Any thoughts would be good, I thought the bleed lasted too
long to be ignored. I have not had any problems since my return, with the
exception of sleeping extreme amounts of time. I took this trip on Mon.
Got back in San Diego on Tues. Slept for 15 hrs straight Tues-Wed. Slept
    12 hrs straight Thurs.

    thanks
    Dave

  2. don't really have high blood pressure that I know of. used to have a
problem when I was overweight in high school, but I keep my weight
reasonable these days. I don't have any known health problems. don't get
sick but once in a great while.

  3. The dry desert air will dry the lining of your nose out and cause it to
crack. Eventually, your body adjusts. Drink lots of fluid - if you're
dehydrated, your mucus membranes are drier than if you're correctly
    hydrated.

Been there, done that. Definitely not fun.

:Drink at least one fluid ounce of
:water for each pound you weigh for NORMAL physical activity. For a ride
:like that, you need lots of h20.

You want me to drink 195 ounces of water???? Give me a break.

  6. Parker is about 30-40 miles due north of quartzsite, right along the
    colorado river.

I almost always have a nosebleed problem in the winter time from the dry
air, doctor told me to dip my fingers in vaseline then poke them up my nose,
so the membranes won't dry out. Usually the nosebleeds only last a couple
minutes but after a 1-2 hour long nosebleed ordeal (resulting in something
resembling my spleen that came out of my nose near the end) I finally
thought I should go to the doctor.

Drink plenty of fluids, and use a saline nasal spray.

  11. Your spleen came out your nose? Damn, my spleen always comes out of
my mouth, and then only when I've been drinking tequila.

What kind of gallon do you use?

    1 Gallon = 128oz. 195/128= 1.55 gallon.

That does not sound excessive to me taken over the course of an 8 - 10 hour
    ride.

It is not uncommon for me to drink a quart of water before a ride and a
quart at the end of my ride. That leaves 4 quart during the day or 1 quart
of water for each tank of gas.

So, a US ounce isn't equal to a UK ounce, either, that's interesting.

    160 / 128
    1.25000000000000000000

    Google says:
    1 Imperial gallon = 1.20095042 US gallons

    Google also says:
1 Imperial fluid ounce = 0.960760333 US fluid ounces

  15. All depends on what you're doing and how ya drink it, I suppose. My
personal record would be 22 qts(I think a standard military canteen is a
quart) of water in one day.

  16. Hydration (which about everyone has already mentioned is probably the
    problem).

You lose/use fluids quicky on a motorcycle. Whenever I go on a long
    trip I use:

    http://www.bagking.com/Merchant2/me...D&Product_Code=Hydrobak&Category_Code=03-Road

Hydration backpacks are great. They let me drink when I want to
rather than having to pull over for an otherwise unwanted break, or
chugging my fluids down at a Gass stop.

  17. Maybe he weighs 273 pounds?
One quart per tank is about right, at the very least a pint. Make
your stops at the gas station also a stop for water. This advice
varies by climate, of course, but this time of year riding in Arizona,
you would be well advised to do the whole quart on every stop. Make
    it Gatorade every other stop.

To OP, you live in San Diego. You rode into a much drier climate at
somewhat higher altitude. For all readers, remember that at high
altitudes, you are much more susceptible to UV radiation. Sunburn
happens fast up here, and dehydration is not fun. For me, it takes
the form of cramping chest pains. Ouch! Remember that diuretics like
    coffee exacerbate the problem.

  18. Eyedrops are also a good thing to have along on a long trip. Couple
o' drops at every stop does wonders for eye fatigue.

What were you doing to stay hydrated while riding?

In August of last year, I went through 4 gallons of water in 1 24 hour
period without any additional bathroom breaks. That desert heat (it was
over 110 in SLC) can suck the moisture right out of you.
