Do I try and outbid the bloke who's top bidder on a lovely set of Gilles
adjustable clip-ons? Currently sitting at 72 quid, retail price 204ukp.

This will be my xmas pressie to myself.

Don't bid these things up well before the close of the auction. Use one
of the sniping services that puts your bid in automatically just before
the end, like the one at www.bidnip.com

You get 5 free snipes to try out. Each snipe costs you 15p, but only if
it's successful at winning the item for you.

    The other advantages are that:

You really do give it the maximum you're prepared to pay and don't have
time to talk yourself into going any higher.

You can retract your bid right up until the end of the auction (because
technically, you haven't placed it yet).

PS - if you do decide to use them, mention the email address
"" while you're joining as I'll get a few free snipes.

I snipe myself at the max price I'm prepared to bid. I very rarely bid
on anything until the last 20 seconds. I wouldn't use any sniping sites,
especially ones that charge when I can do the same thing with a click of
    a mouse.

If you guarantee to be free at the end of the auction, then fair enough.
I'm still on my free snipes anyway though - you get 5 free to start with
and every now and then they give you a couple more. I was lucky enough
to get 20, and I don't buy on EBay all that often so they're still
    going.

They've certainly helped me to get things for a lower than average
price. Just set the sniper to bid on every item going at a low but
reasonable price, eventually one wins (often one finishing at a strange
hour, so the manual snipers are in bed) and you cancel the rest. The
    loosing snipes are free.

Anyway, it gets the thumbs up from me.
