The alternator conversion for the CBX is around 2cm longer than stock,
and I have Rickman engine bars. Wot are a very tight fit already.

Would it be possible (note: "possible", not "advisable") to shim out
the bars with some specially made metally bits <looks at WUN> [or
    washers] with slightly longer bolts?

The alternative would be to discard the bars, with all the messy
    expensive inevitability that would ensue.

The rhs could remain stock, just the left side needs moving. All bolts
go into the frame, except at the front where the two sides meet.

SD, let me know how big you'd like said spacers to be and I'll bung them
    in the post.

I'm in no rush, but I don't want to inconvenience you more than I
    already have.

Drop me your addie, and I'll come and collect on Saturday, if that
    suits.

    I like this bit.
    Wot a nice chap.

I guess the best option is to wait for the alternator to turn up
    first, then do some measuring.

    Would you like drawings?

There is one potential problem, though: I'm not sure the BFO bolt that
goes through the rear of the gearbox has enough "spare" length on it.

Ho hum, I'll cross that bridge if I come to it.

Hmmm, I'm supposed to be going to my parents on Saturday morning and
then the Derby beer festival in the afternoon but I'll work something
    out.

We might have to involve the Pixies and their new address in this one
but that'd be closer for you and no big deal for me to drop them in
there if I get home early enough on Friday. It's a shit that I'm
finished at Coryton or I'd have just arranged to meet you in a pub
where you could watch me drink beer while you sipped a coke.

FFS, you've got my mobile number, go and measure the original one and
I'll allocate a slightly longer one to motorcycle repairs before I
    leave Kendal in the morning.

Threaded rod is an easy because I'll just have it away with a decent
length of the stuff and you can then cut it to size. You'll have to
order some decent stuff at some point in the future because I won't be
able to get plated and it'll rust fairly quickly.

    Sound good to me.
A quick description should do. Give me the diameter of the bolts, the
outside diameter of the spacers and lengths and we should be good to go.
Is it likely to be a high tensile one? It should have some markings on
the head that'll give a clue. If not a length of studding and a couple
of nuts and Bob's your mum's brother.

    Okey dokey.
No, it's just M14 threaded rod, with a nut on each end.
One 22mm, one 24mm. No, not my fault - might even be original.

I'm going to ring Andy with the details before he gets cross with me
    again.

M14 isn't good. It's not a 'preferred' size and as such needs ordering
in. I'll see if we've got any 9/16" which is near as **** it the same
diameter and would do the same job. The other short term fix is to use
M12 and replace it when you get the opportunity.
    I don't get cross.

Yeah some spacers like you get on wingracks will do it. As long as
you're not planning on slinging it up the road at speed. Some good HD
bolts and you'll be well away.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

Sell the engine bars, and buy a spare motor from the proceeds, more
    like.

I see there's an OEM exhaust on Ebay with a starting bid of £1500. I
    don't think I'll bother.

    Update:

I could only find one length of 14mm studding in our workshop and it's
about 350mm long so I 'borrowed' a longer length of 12mm in case it's
not long enough when you go to fit it.

M6 & M10 helicoil sets are in the van along with normal taps in case
the threads can be salvaged by running a tap through them and tapping
drills for the helicoil taps if you have to go down that route.

Care to ping me an addie for Sunday?

The alternator's ordered now, so no turning back. :)

    Well, that wasn't too horrible.

The front large bolt hole already had a (damaged) helicoil in it, so
that got ripped out, then much cautious drilling and tapping allowed
the fitting of two new M10 x 1.5 helicoils. The second tap was quite
    troublesome, but ultimately successful.

    Bit unfortunate that I needed M10 x 1.25, but one can't have
everything. :) I needed some shiny new bolts, anyway. I already have
two unshiny ones. I won't know the length until I sort out the spacer
    requirements.

By comparison, drilling and tapping the hole for the alternator was a
piece of cake. Helicoil went in easy.

Tools packed away ready for the morning, I shall have to acquire some
    Chimay Bleu for Mr B.
