    I saw a new quad bike in our street this morning and noted that the
    taxation class on the tax disc said "Bicycle". Does that mean that
    quad bikes are treated as motorbikes by the law and can use motorbike
    lanes and motorbike parking facilities yet the riders don't need
    helmets and can drive them on a car licence?

    Are there any quad bikers in this newsgroup who might know the
    situation?

  2. "quad bike?" Bike is short for bicycle which refers to 2 wheels. Quad
    means 4. How the **** did they come up with "quad bike"?

    Well, a cycle with four wheels is a quadricycle. So, a "quad quad", then.

    Some of these are fucking lethal, too. A young guy at work bought one on a
    whim, and used it to get to work. I would pass him in the car (my
    inter-bike days) waiting to join the main road, and within half a mile he'd
    pass me. And I would be doing 60. His "quad" (one of the cheap imported
    ones) had a solid rear axle and off-road-type tyres, and he didn't wear a
    helmet or eye protection. He kept it 3 months and then got a car. Thank
    God for that - amost every day I was waiting for the message - "Steve won't
    be in today."

    <snip story about someone who didn't die>

    I fear you may not fully understand the scientific method.
