Bytel bought the Carrera 4 today, just till the 997 sitting in the showroom
rolls out on January 1. I know it's sad but the spinal problems (1) keep
stopping me from riding bikes and ya gotta have some hi jinks or it just
isn't worth working 12x6x48. £593/month is affordable for any half decent
company. By your reckoning of £10k that's every 16 months which is ok.
£1200/year insurance, being old has it's advantages.

    (1) a chronic lack of backbone?!

And you know what - for most people, and certainly the Ginja one, this
is exactly what is required. The 'track tool' comment above is a bit
of a giveaway, and to say he's "had to" replace stuff is disengenious
at the least, as he's obviously only doing it to be more
competitive[1] and as such should really be regarded as a racer.
Clearly if you want a race bike, you should buy a race bike.

[1] Or more 'trendy' most likely.

No, the whole point was that the components on one
bike didn't match those on the other, so it would
necessary to take the additional cost into account
    before comparing like with like.

If you want to ride on the road on a bike with
perfectly adequate suspension components then that's
your prerogative, but some people want to use a bike
on the track (not to race) and are of a certain ability
where they prefer the better components from Ohlins
    and the like.

But the point is that buying a Jap litre bike then
adding all the stuff it really should come with anyway
is going to cost more than that.

Nice work. That's your daily driver, is it?
    Only 12x6? Lazy ****.
600 nicker/month is fine I reckon. When I look at some of the things
    we spend money on...

Oh, and I developed that 10k theory when I was young and idealistic.
Now I'm older, and I want faster and better cars.
Should be cheaper than that. Oh, I remember, you live a fucking war
    zone, don't you.

Yes and no, we keep a couple of pool vehicles. As I now live under two miles
from our building keeping it below 12k/annum isn't going to be a problem
    though.
Well I haven't chosen to live in a god forsaken desert so there is stuff to
    do.
If it was coming out of my beer money it would hurt, it's a corporate option
    only IMO.
You going to go for it then?
I think my BT18 postcode is well rated but insurance is 20+% more in N.I.
due to (false) whiplash claims. I doubt you could get a new 911 covered
Class1 for much less anywhere though.

Singapore flights are looking like directs so no stopover.

I'll have to see where I end up next, and for how long. When I get
back to the UK, I'll be looking for something a bit tasty, for sure,
but I'm yet to decide what form(s) that may take.
My cousin, who is 30 next month pays much less than that for his
Carerra 2. It's an 01/51 reg, to be fair. He's in
Kingston-Upon-Thames in a gated compound overlooking the river.

And my mate Dave pays 1200 for his 360 Modena.
Boo! I could do with a beer.

That may have been _your_ point, and nobody would argue with that, but
you were replying to, and apparently trying to refute, Rob's comment
that for him a gixxer represents much better value for money.

Which is undoubtedly also the case.

There you go again. Why do you think that a road bike 'should come
    with' race-level components as standard?

Spot on, I can't see the benefits in ohlins suspension on peak district
roads, other than when that inevitable lump of cow shit splatters onto
the bike... it may just wipe off gold anodising a little easier.

The stock gixxer suspension is more than good enough for the road, which
is where my bike would be used almost exclusively.

Plus servicing on a gixxer is probably far cheaper than a duke.

    Who said they're race-level components? There's
a world of difference between something like
standard Brembos, radial Brembos and then billet
Brembos. Just like Ohlins forks and shocks.

In my mind, a flagship bike should come with
flagship components. The ZX10R is supposedly
Kawasaki's flagship bike, but it doesn't have
a decent shock, forks or brakes on it.

But, as I said, if you're happy with what you've
got then I'm not arguing with you...

  14. Um, well, plenty have in the past. It depends if you want to race it or
    not.
