    Hi,

New second hand bike. A '93 zzr250. 19k kms on the clock - in very, very
good condition. Was going to buy a new bike but came across this one for
    the right price.

Just wondering at roughly what temperature the thermo fan should kick in?
Hot day last week in heavy traffic (for launceston anyway - theres a peak
10 minutes here :) ) and the temperature gauge was getting towards half way
and I noticed that the thermo fan was not going.

Should I investigate further? Or do these bikes wait until they're a bit
warmer than that before turning the fan on?

    Cheers,
    Brad

PS> Any one know a good source for a owners manual for this bike. Only thing
missing when I bought it... None on ebay in .au.

Ok. I'll not fret about it too much then. I only have cars to compare it to.

Now why didn't I think of that?

Must be that the local kawasaki dealer has given me no reason to think of
him as anything other than a knob.

    Thanks for the advice.

My experience with Kawasakis is that the fan doesn't usually kick in until the
bike gets pretty hot... i.e. when you are stationary. I can't imagine
Launceston having traffic snarls which would halt your progress for too long.
Some electrically minded person here will tell you how you can bypass the
sensor and make the fan switch on to be sure its OK.

    Locate sensor

    unplug sensor

join wires together...if it is a plug, stick a paperclip in the
terminals...if there is only one wire, ground it to frame

temp sender for guage is not fan switch

    turn ignition on if neccessary

    fan...him should go 'whirrrr'

does not mean sensor is good, just let bike idle until fan comes on then
you will know; how hot it gets and if it all works. Temp guages are
fairly arbitrary in their calibration so do not panic, as long as the
coolant does not boil all is well.

The sensor is on the left side of the radiator. The thermo fan should
start up when the temperature gauge reads between about 1/2 and 2/3.

i got the same bike and my fan never comes on wuile the engines running,
only flicks on if the temp guage is well over half and you've just turned
the engine off, stays on for about 30 seconds

Well you see, since it's a fairly quiet fan located down amongst all of
the crash-and-bang of the engine it's kind of hard to tell if the fan
is spinning or not while you're tootling down the road at 110...

good point... going that fast though the temp guage never gets that high on
my bike, the only time it ever reaches 3/4 is in stop/start 35 C type
weather, and it seems to come on after i kill the motor.
