I recently looked through some holiday pic's, and among memories revived
was also a near miss - a visit to the Pic du Midi Observatory last
September. It unfortunately turned out to be too late in the day when I
crossed the Col du Tourmalet last September.

This Observatory was opened for the public 3-4 years ago, after the
professional activities had moved on. It always had a great reputation
for high quality planetary observations, due to the mountaintop location
    and steady atmospheric conditions.

Worth considering a visit if you should happen to fancy a break from
    skiing.

    And SOTs?

    Right, ShiteOldTelescopes.

  2. Actually, last season they opened up the Pic to skiing. Previously the
cable car link there was for observatory staff and supplies only.

So I might kill two birds with one stone, come February.
