    All,

I have a quick question about your opinion of this rear drive pulley.

It is off my 2001 heritage softail with only ~16,000 miles. I found
this condition at the time I am changing my rear tire. This is the
first time I am changing the tire, I haven't seen this last time (a
shop changed it), nor did I inspect it at the 15K service since I knew
I would be changing the tire shortly.

Is this "normal"? There are no sharp edges, just the pitting and
delamination on the two spots you see.

I just want to know of horror stories/success stories you have had
regarding this condition, and if it needs replaced. Also, the bike is
out of warranty, if needs replaced, should the dealer/company be
    responsible.

The bike is ridden to events/rallies/leisure, as well as commute. No
extreme conditions endured, however the bike does see rain and dusty
    country roads.

also posting separately in alt.motorcycles.harley for discussion.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Normal. You have ot remember that sometimes you get debris between the
pulley and the belt be it metal or rocks. They can chip off the chrome.
No worries. Just make sure you carefully check your belt for any
    object embedded in the belt.

It is hard to see the front pulley unless you remove the belt, to do
that you have to take off both the outer and inner primary. This
requires special tools and about 6 hours of work for a shade tree
mechanic that doesn't do it all the time.

No, I haven't pulled the primaries. I won't hesitate to do so when I
need to replace the belt. I talked to a guy at work last night and he
said, no problem. He has been riding and maintining his hogs for at
least 15 years. I guess the expected life is about 70,ooo miles or
5-7 years... doesn't sound like good material to me. There's got to
    be a better way....

I'll be puttin the pulley back on this week, Friday maybe and getting
back on the road. I'll make sure when I give it a good bath to look
at the belt and pulley when doing the back whee.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.
