The repair is suberb, tyvm WUN. Now I just have to get on with the rest
of it. Oh, and plant some more apple trees, sharpish.

Colin, tyvm also for the magical appearance of said repair in the
    greenhouse. Just home today.

My pleasure. Just reserve judgement until it's done a pressing or two...

You mean I can't discuss my courgette problems here? In fact I have a
    nasty case of courgette envy.

I don't think anyone has ever been in any doubt about that.

And what do I do about the black fly on my broad beans, eh?
I have a couple of decent sized pods. It's the extraneous wildlife on
    them that gives me grief.

There's a relatively simple operation to help with that.

    It's called the "Reverse Gower".

Water with hose set on high to knock them off. Some people swear by
weak fairy liquid mix from a spray bottle but I don't want any
chemicals (synthetic, yes tbc I know!) in my garden. Pinch out the
tops. Put ladybirds on them. Companion planting.

What I want to know is what is eating my cabbages. I've been out at
night with a torch and can't spot anything.

Dunno, I don't grow fruit. [1] My guess is you're beyond help. Service
revolver, bottle of whisky, it's the kindest thing.

[1} Though I have a baby redcurrant bush I have high hopes for.

No probs. I'm just glad we got the right house.

Presumably you pinch the tops out anyway once the first flowers have
    set.

I have to protect almost any tender young plants from the pesky
woodpigeons. Their hurried flapping takeoffs as I approach the vegetable
plot are a bit of a give away in that case though. Lengths of old
plastic trellis bent over the rows of seedlings until they have got to a
reasonable size and less attractive to the "Take two coos, taffy"
    vandals helps.

    What's-a marrow you...
