somewhat earlier than that. It's from Machievelli's "The Prince".

Quite possibly based on something attributed to Caligula (and
inscribed on an arch dedicated to Caligula in Pompeii): "Oderint Dum
Metuant" (Let them hate me as long as they fear me).

  5. I think it was probably Machiavelli.

    <fx: googles>

    From
    http://www.constitution.org/mac/prince.txt

    "CHAPTER XVII

Concerning cruelty and clemency, and whether it is better to be
    loved than feared"

    Yep. Machiavelli.

I'm still not sure whether to be 'happy' or not at these comparisons.

For instance, it's not like I'm being mobbed in the street or anything like
    that/

Secondly, he really looks a bit thick. I'd like to think I'm not.

On the positive side, I'm seven years older but I've got (slightly) more
    hair.

But still nowhere near as many as like football.
I don't see how this makes any difference.
Henman is a nobody. I won't hold my breath waiting for him to win
something major. And he's got *no* personality.

What do you base that on Ace?

I'd say more people play football (even if it's a kick about in the park)
    then play tennis.

Availability of facilities for one thing being a factor.

Have you seen any of the ladies tennis though? Some of them are rather
    attractive...

I caught a bit of a match on Monday... more of that please!

I think as a proportion of the people that want to watch the games on
TV, there's a much higher player/fan ratio in Tennis than in football.

Even higher in cycling and fishing. In fact, I think in both those
sports, more people do them than watch them.

Isn't that circular though? The more it's on TV, the more people will
    latch onto it.
No.. don't like that either, except for the veterans tournament when
people like McEnroe and Nastase play. Not only do people hit the ball
more than once for a point, they can be quite amusing too.
