  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
    drugs began to take hold. I remember Snowleopard
    Now that, that requires dedication to the art, that does.

    Not me guv. I did live there for a year in a caravan in a rather
    excellent mushing field, but got bored & moved to London. Somehow I
    ended up in Swindon :-/

    <rant>

    Not when you have the following scenario...

    'mum can I watch the football'

    'watch it at your friends house, like the last two'

    <thinks, peace and quiet, siblings in separate houses>

    'can't he's going out to watch it' [1]
    'well you're not watching it in here'

    cue strop <insert 10 year old girl strop tactics here>

    <fx does calm parent thing>

    <fx does shouty parent thing>

    <lightbulb moment - sees bright side - 90 minutes of peace>

    <fx drags old tv from loft space, bungs it in middle of my bedroom
    floor, sticks bare coax cable in back, finds football>

    <fx retires downstairs to read>

    <fx loud thumps from upstairs at every goal>

    <fx shouts of Rooooney>[2]

    Then getting over excited child to sleep, with accompanying moans from
    brother because she's been watching TV past 9 o'clock on a school
    night.

    If I hadn't been there I'd have sworn she wasn't from my loins. She
    even wears a baseball cap :(

    [1] What is all this watching it together thing about? You just end up
    with pissed idiots stumbling home causing trouble.

    [2] who I'm informed is one of these professional football players.

    <end rant> <deep breath> <and relax>

    I know that I'm not guilty of that. I couldn't give a toss about
    England. But I reckon I could take you to a West Ham game and you'd
    enjoy it - not the football, but the atmosphere and the banter, and a
    few beers afterwards.

    Is she attractive? If so she can have my e-mail address before the next

    I can appreciate the tactics, but it still won't make watching a game I
    find uninteresting worth doing. By the same token I'd not expect
    someone who doesn't enjoy bike racing to be into the whole Sete Gibernau
    giving Valentino Rossi a huge run for his money at the MotoGP this year.

    Each to their own.

    You're not. It's instructive that the 'real' football fans, like you
    and Adie - people who fly thousands of miles to see their team play,
    don't make a song and dance about internationals at all. It's all
    these part-timers, who don't give a monkey about football as a game,
    and just come out of the woodwork during these competitions.
    I'm sure I would.

  17. But watching a game on tv and watching a game at the stadium
    are different things, yes?

    Price ain't everything. The new plan chez moi is to order staple goods
    from Asda online, as it's cheaper and means they lug the heavy stuff
    to my door. Then to pop round to Waitrose/local butchers/farm shop
    for the meat and other things I wouldn't leave to Asda.

    Seems to work so far...

    I was remarking on this very fact recently and how it was the best bit. I
    get to watch the games that interest me, I know the players and there's a
    degree of manufactured pride I allow myself to indulge in. And then, I get
    to talk about it with fulltime football fans who don't know I'm not an FA
    aficianado[1]. If I get caught out I simply say that my main perference is
    motogp and hope they don't know more about it than I do.

    [1] I have no home team, this may be the problem. The closest thing I have
    to a home team is Yeovil Town which I refuse to support because its a
    shithole.
