Well, I think that's kinda my point. As I work from home, my home *is* my
workplace. I do have to go to our head office every other week for a couple
of days, but this is counted as a legitimate travel expense, as it's not my
main place of work. You couldn't get the 40p/mile and *then* claim tax
relief as well. For normal jobs (like training field staff), my work only
pays 20p/mile, so my accountant tells me I'm entitled to claim tax relief on
the remaining balance up to 40p/mile.
Well that is the bit I'm not sure about. As it's not a bricks and mortar
work*place*, I don't know whether it counts or not.

It's sufficiently confusing that I make it my Accountant's problem :)

THe EU copyright directive is a most evil instrument. This kind of event
makes me feel like I'm living in "One flew over..."
I'd give copyright holders in most things maybe 5 years grace.

If your music is loud enough to be heard outside your
car/garage/whatever by more than just you then it's a public
    performance.

EU? The PRS has been operating much the same system for many, many
    years.[/QUOTE]

    It's all getting worse though

  5. Bzzzzt. Only if it's live, otherwise it's a public broadcast.

Does it matter if it's a performance or a broadcast?

Sorry if I missed something but I thought the point was that if it was
publicly heard then the author/performer of the song/track/whatever had
    to be compensated in reddies.

Hey, you could make your fortune here.

Some sort of setup with switches on the doors, linked to a
switch on the radio, to switch the radio off when customers come
    in.

    <Thinks>

Mined Ewe, you'd also need some sort of RFID thingy for staff,
so the radio didn't switch off when they came in.

But hasn't the performance already been paid for by the BBC or whoever
    you're listening to ?

  11. Utter, utter wankers. What the PRS fail to understand is that the
workshop is not a public place for the purpose of this piece of crap.

This was brought in originally because all kinds of shops used to have a
loudspeaker outside blaring out the Light Programme.
Too fucking right. Any time you're out in public you need a Performance
    Licence.

I have enough problems with the TV licensing TYVM, who don't believe
that we don't sit around all day watching TV instead of working

I think that revolution is in the air

Well, if the TV Licence people turn up, just show them round
your workshops and hilight the absence of TVs.

Better turn the radio off before letting them in, though,
otherwise they'll grass you up to their mates at the PRS, and
you'll be in a different sort of trouble.

Not my field, old boy. Vehicles may be defined as places of work,
under Health and Safety legislation. I wonder if a taxi driver, for
example, playing the radio as he plies his trade, could fall foul of
    PRS interference.

Would this license requirement extend to playing recorded music too,
    one wonders?

Ditto. A vaguely officious, threateningly-worded letter IIRC. Not really
the way to win me over, that (nor very many other people I would have
    thought).

I feel a letter coming on:

    Dear PRS,

You *stupid* authoritarian cunts. Where do you get off? I had some
sympathy for your case until very recently (like ten minutes ago). It's
    all gone.

**** you, and the rather knackered horse you rode in on. In the eyes.
    Right in the eyes.

    Love
