    Artics are usually 400bhp.

    That's 10bhp/tonne.

  4. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
    (The Older Gentleman) saying
    something like:
Ireland has a VED related to engine size, not power. It leads to some
stupid situations, as it takes no account of the fuel - thus a 2litre
non-turboed diesel car will cost the same as a turboed Cosworth to tax.
    Some 560euros per annum.

  6. That's for insurance, I think.

A 2CV is rated as... two.

Whan I was a student, my Mark One 1300cc Escort Estate was rated as 7CV.
But the engine was never that powerful......

    Income tax at 31% if you're earning more than 15 grand a year, 41% @ 24
grand a year, 46.75% at 30 grand and 52% for anything over. Plus 10% for
    national insurance.

And they're all fucking frogs, of course.

Well... company car tax used to be based on the RRP of the car and
there's generally a lot of leeway between the RRP and what the fleet co.
would pay for a company lease vehicle (a blatant guess but illustrates
the point; it doesn't matter what the fact is, the manufacturers wild
    claims are good enough)

Beats me. A lot of the Continentals do a lot of things better than us.

I'd be happy to have a European flag alongside a Union Jack on the back
of my car. Trouble is, it would invite vandalism from the hard of
    thinking.

France is essentially bankrupt and there are worse times ahead for them,
    how's that for starters?

On the negative side, I can only get French, German or Belgian beer at
most supermarkets and the availability of new world wines is
    positively appalling.
OK, _really_ on the negative side, income tax is much higher[1] and
    the shops don't open Sundays.

[1] Apparently. I pay it in der Schweiz[2] myself.
[2] Where all of the above benefits are true, only more so, and the
    tax rate is much lower.

MWSt, shirley? And it's less than that, I'm sure. 7.6%, IIRC[1][2]

[1] Which, less face it, is only marginally more likely than you doing
    so, despite the fact that I live here. :-}
    [2] Unless it's Kanton-specific, of course...

Just been reminded that this an acronym for "Worthy Oriental

The derivation of "wog" is much disputed, with no claim really
    standing up to scrutiny, iirc
