Twere on the news earlier.. You'd best work out where the next nearest
pub is, as that one is going to be a 50 floor tower block soon.

That's the fourth or fifth one to go since we've been here. Most that
are left are chainpubs round Canary Wharf.

I think there's only the Ship and the Lord Nelson left on this side of
    the Island.

It's not really the nearest, just the nearest I'd consider going into.

It is, apparently. Never ventured down Manilla St, don't want to be
keelhauled or press-ganged, or whatever they do. Or bump into G0nz0,
    for that matter. :)

In the last month, 2 more pubs closed in the village where I live and one
other is teetering on the edge.

According to the landlady at one and the landlord at t'other, it's because
the smoking ban has seen off the majority of the drinkers.

Less smoking more the supermarkets are selling 8 cans of
Stella/Fosters/Guinness/whatever for less than a pound a can coupled with
a fundamental cultural shift to other forms entertainment.

That and some pubs a pint of Guinness is fast approaching ?4 a pint, most
    well over ?3.

Jeez, where do you drink?[1] It's £2.70 in my local.

[1] I admit that the West End is pricey.

Mainly Hampstead, Euston, Camden, and Brighton. Prices for south London
    are much the same.

You can't use words like "culture" in the same sentence as "Bolton pub
    landlord". It's just not on.
I've no idea if that's expensive or not, but I rarely see anyone drinking
Guinness in the pub I go to.

Heh, even in Bolton (or Bacup or Bury where some of my family live)
there's been a shift away from traditional entertainments (the pub).

Guinness is always a little more expensive than bitter - more at the
    premium lager end of prices.

I've stopped going to the pub since the smoking ban - well, I've stopped
going to pubs where the smoking ban is adhered to. Bargain Booze gets
    the money instead.

The pubs in Brighton and London are as busy as ever - some seem more so.

Have been in decline for years - certainly as long as I've been drinking
    (mid 80s).

  19. Sure, but the decline seems to have been accelerating - a lot of them
were teetering on the brink, and the slightest downturn in trade
(smiking bane) was enough to close the doors. I recall at the start of
the 90s Whitbread's property dept had a list of village pubs going for
affordable dosh - some of them were very nice, too. I wouldn't be at all
suprised if many of the pubs now closing were bought by hopeful would-be
publicans then and have only just been clearing a profit since.

There's a wonderful pub that we frequent on pool team end-of-season
road trips, where the 7.3% Old Rosie is always in fine condition and
costs £2.60 a pint, they have two large, level tables and the shutters
go up at 11 on the dot ... and the ashtrays come out at 11.10. They
    don't close till 01.00 and until then it's a Smokeasy ;-)

I usually only manage a couple of fags after 11 as I'm fucking
obliterated following a few pints of the aforementioned Old Rosie, as
you'd expect. Just as well, 'cos I'm fairly flammable by then, I'd
    expect.
