Project R1 : Insurance have coughed up

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Steve Bullimore, Jan 19, 2004.

  1. I think I've been a bit of a spawney git:

My poor old 1998 R1 (read shed), that got nicked, never got found. At
first I thought it was a bit of a shame considering all the hell we'd
been through together - that we were seperated so abruptly. But, never
mind eh, cos the insurance payed out - 3,500 quid. Now, considering
the bike was probably worth less than a grand I didnt even bother
    haggling for more.

In the meantime I went out in search of another 1998 R1 - and I found
an absolute minter, advertised for 3,850 sovs. 19k miles, FYSH, 1
previous owner, alarm/immobiliser, there isnt a mark on it, its
completely original and it really does look like new. This bike had
never seen rain. I couldnt get him down any more than 3,700 so thats
what I ended up paying. When I got it home and was looking thru the
service receipts I noticed the last service had cost over a grand!
They replaced the whole exhaust system cos the exup valve had stuck!
    Nice one.

So there ya go - From a basket case 97,000 miler, to a prestine
replacement for 200 quid (plus the 100 that my insurance went up by).

I'm now treating it to my 130 mile commute every day, in the rain &
    salt encrusted roads. Shame really.

    Steve.

    Spawny get indeed
Yersh. Wouldn't it have been a better idea to get a winter hack?

  4. For 200 quid it probably "feels" like a winter hack.

200 quid being the difference between his insurance payout and the
price of the replacement bike. Not the total cost of the new bike.

  6. Think about it. You have a non-running bike, that will require
a large amount of work to get road-worthy again. It gets nicked.
With what the insurance company gives you + what an ATM will give
you in one shot, you get a minter. For me, that'll feel like a
huge dollop of new bike for naff all money.

Ah. There was me thinking you meant that a 200 quid R1 will be a hack.
I had wondered if I'd missed summat.

Perhaps he's hoping this one will get nicked too and he'll get enough money
    for a GSXR1000.
