Project Garage is go

  1. If any one here has ever gone into Walkers at Cross Keys near King's
Lynn it is an eye opener. The two old gents (brothers, late 60s) that
run it are I would guess ex army or navy. Their workshop floor is sealed
and you could eat your dinner off of it. The work tops are all stainless
steel. The bench vices, pillar drills and lathes are all painted white.
Loads of lights everywhere. They have photos of most of the bikes they
service on the wall. Lots of lovingly restored old, old bikes are some
times there. It gives you a standard to which to strive.

One good idea I saw there was an old scrap electric motor driving a
*large* car alternator (both cleaned up and painted white) which they
use to charge batteries. A possible 100 amp source but also regulated to
prevent overcharging. Total cost bugger all.

  2. The sand used for sand blasting is clean, regular sized and normally
    oven dried. That could work.

Tough invite. Even if she was coming over, I doubt even I
could persuade her to come to a garage opening.

.... and at the halfway stage.

    Lessons learned:
5 litres of floorpaint doesn't *quite* do a first coat on a double
    garage.
It does go on quite easily.
    It doesn't take very long.
It's soon apparent where the PVA isn't quite dry. Never mind, those
bits will be picked up with the second coat.
When painting one's garage, one also manages to paint the inside of
    one's house. Arse.

<fx: goes to Screwfix to order more paint>

I can't believe I'd keep a pair of socks that long. Most of them get
left in a hotel; or eaten by the washing machine.

Sure, I'll still challenge them though.

  8. The 13A plug? **** him with a 10ft bargepole if he has any agenda about
changing it. It's one of the safest plug designs in the world.
Not having met him, I'll reserve judgement on that.

Apparently it's confusing working out which colour wire goes where.
I've not met him, but I have met people who worked with him.

ITYM that it would have done - but for all the paint that you managed
    to transfer into the house.
I can just see you crouched in the corner, eyebrows akimbo, startled
expression on DefCon3, looking for a way out ...

I thought it was Red to Live, Black to Neutral and whats left to
Earth. Mind you its a pain having to remember what can be plugged
into the 5A sockets and what needs a 15A socket. And its a bugger
trying to find replacement plugs these days.

  18. That was in the OLD DAYS, GRANDAD.
I'd have a serious word with your landlord, iiwy.

If it's your own place I'd have a serious word with yourself.

  19. Every new appliance for the past 20 years has/had a colour guide on the
flex. Most new stuff these days has the plug moulded on anyway.[1]

Still, no matter how easy it was made, there'd still be numpties out
there who could make a pig's arse of it.

[1]I perhaps see Dyson's agenda - it might be cheaper for him to buy in
    crappy moulded on European plugs.
