Yeah, but when it works it's so cool - look what I did with just this
itty-little bit of code (which took me three months to write and I
hope I never have to change it)

Heh - that's *exactly* my experience - from "wow this is incredibly
powerful" to "jesus, this is really hard work, and will be a nightmare
    to maintain".

Was that meant in a "Frankie Howerd" voice, as that's how
I imagined it as I read it )

Yeah. Unfortunately that seems to be the problem with most of todays
'enabling' technologies. Great idea in principle but a complete head
**** when it comes to implementation (of the 'enablement') and
maintenance of the end product. Last place I worked we were using OLE DB
and XSLT to retrieve, translate and co-ordinate data from a variety of
sources (Remote bespoke hardware and local/remote databases).
Then serve the results up to various client applications in the form of
XML pages. Could I get my head round it all? Could I ****. Ultimately
it just ended up seeming as complication for the sake of it. I pity the
poor secondary sods who get handed this type of application to update and
maintain. Mind you I have to say I was rather losing interest in the whole
idea of sitting behind a keyboard in a darkened room going 'tippety tappety'
all day long on a keyboard. So my motivations were somewhat less than they
    should have been.

Oh btw I'm just off out on the pushbike for a quick 100k. Having just put
my entry in for the Ironbridge classic triathlon.)

You've not seen "stick man" Ferrier recently, then. He looks like his
own younger brother - spooky, it is ;-)
