Problems with Swingarm and the sprocket carrier on a Suzuki gsx600F 1995

  1. Hi everyone,

I've got a problem concerning the swingarm and sprocket carrier on my
    1995 Suzuki GSX600F.
It looks like the bolts holding the sprocket carrier has been rubbing
into the Swingarm and there are slight marks on the inside (against
the Wheel) of the swingarm showing where the bolts have passed.
I've replaced both wheels on my bike and the service repair shop that
did this checked that everything was ok inside the rear wheel (cush
    etc).
Both Wheels are aligned properly and adjusting on the rear wheel wont
help, the clearance between the sprocket carrier bolts and the
swingarm is less than 1 mm i think. I've heard that the clearance
between the bolts and the swingarm is supposed to be quite small on my
type of bike (between 1mm and 2mm).
I've had the bike to the repair shop and they could'nt figure it out
    :(
I've heard about shims that can be put between the carrier and the
swingarm and i'm wondering where i can buy these also ????

I'm grateful for all answers :)

    Regards
    Trond, Norway

First make sure that *everything* has been put assembled in the right order
    and nothing's missing.
    This link might help
    http://www.motofiches.com/sites/TYRBUW/fiches.asp?mk=SUZUKI&cc=&ml=&id=JS1GN72A

    Is the sprocket original?
Is it on the right way round?
Is the swinging arm bent or cracked?
How are you checking wheel alignment? - don't trust the markers
Are the sprocket bolts original? Replacements might have larger heads.
Are the swingarm, wheel and carrier bearing all OK?
Is there clearance statically, no load?
How about when you're sitting on the bike, suspension compressed?
If there's contact under braking/acceleration then the swingarm bearings may
    have a flat-spot.

You've never heard of shims being required on these bikes but they doesn't
    mean much.

  3. Hi and thanks for the answer :)

I dont know if the sprocket is original because i just bought the bike
last summer and i was told it was a new sprocket on the bike then.
The Swingarm has a crack on it, i have asked the repair shop if this
was something to be concerned about. They told me that the crack
probably came from trying to fit GIVI racks on the bike.
The crack is located at about 3/4 of the length of the swingarm and is
about 1/2 cm deep. The swingarm on the bike is made of steel and is
hollow, the crack is not penetrating the steel but it looks like its
been bent into a small gap.
I've kind of ruled out this as a part of this problem since the steel
swingarms seems to be so solid, but i might of course be wrong there
    :(
The clearance (or the lack of clearance) is the same if i'm on the
    bike or not.
The bolts have less than 1 mm clearance from the swingarm (i've tried
to put a single a4 paper between the swingarm and the bolts without
    luck).
BUT there seems to be no problems turning the wheel whether i'm on the
bike or its on the center stand, no contact with the bolts even though
the bolts are as close to the swingarm as i've ever seen.

The GIVI rack explaination doesn't ring true if I'm visualising "the crack"
    correctly.
Could you take a picture of your crack and put it up on the net ?[1]
    Post URL here.

I'd say the most likely thing is that the swingarm has accident damage
or has been bent by someone trying to ride away with a shackle lock or
    heavy chain on the wheel.

    [1] I don't *believe* I just typed that!

  5. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Dave Emerson"
    You and me both.

  6. Hi again,

My bike is currently in winter storage but i'm gonna try to get a
picture of the swingarm and post it on the web.

Thanks for all the help so far :)
