ITIL's a piece of piss. It's really just a glorified set of definitions of
roles and responsibilities for IT service management and change management,
with standardised terminology, job titles etc. Any organisation would have
something of the sort anyway, but ITIL is a fully-worked-out package that
you can get off the shelf and use, and be confident that it's based on
proven best practice. It's also easy for organisations to adopt, because
it's so widespread that your staff will want to get ITIL qualifications and
experience on their CVs, and you don't have to do it all-or-nothing - just
hand out the titles, start using the terminology, and say things like
    "working towards" and "partially ITIL-compliant".

it was a direct answer to your question.

If I'd said "SPOCE can help your friend acquire the knowledge and
qualification", it would have been redundant.

But I see you've got the message now.

I've not real idea what you mean by this.
There a couple of points here. Firstly, I've done all sorts of jobs,
but the one thing I've never tried is direct sales, because I know I
wouldn't be any good at it.

Secondly, I've no idea why you think I'd come to any grief dealing
your customers. I may not be able to sell many helmets, but I can pass
the time of day with almost anyone.

It would be quite a mistake to confuse my "persona" on Usenet, or even
what I might be like in a pub context, with what I'm like
    professionally.

And that's its biggest problem; it's too vague and wishy-washy to be
of much use in most implementations, and frankly it only replicates
what any sane management team would be doing anyway. As a checklist,
    though, it's not bad.[/QUOTE]

It saves time, because you don't get the business trying to reinvent the
wheel, and you have a whole library of reasons why they can't do what they
    want to do.
Heh. Can you imagine a 100% pure white-bread native ITIL shop? It'd be
like working for the God Channel.

not really. In effect, I'm "IT Director" for a specific business line
    within the overall org.

So - all joking aside - you're actually on the management side of the line
    now?

err, yes - I have been "a manager" since ~August '04, and fully "on the
management side of the line" as you put it since May last year.

Why, are you looking for a job?

oh, and I wasn't joking with that description above - for a specific
business line[1] I am "head of IT" for our London office.
    It's not very interesting.
good - I think you'd be in violation of my "no doddery old cunts"
    policy.

[1] predictably enough, Marketing, Sales & Client Services.
