Primed for the French Run

  1. They've recently changed the 100 peso coin in Chile. It used to be
something like an old pre-decimal penny, but now it's....

....well, it's a euro. Seriously. I couldn't believe it when I got one in
my change. I had some euros in my pocket so I compared it.

Exactly the same dimensions, exactly the same bi-metallic construction,
exactly the same interrupted milling round the edge. If you present the
side that doesn't say '100 peso' you'd take it for a euro, given that
the euros from different European countries differ in decoration.

The Chileans, when I mentioned this, grinned as one. They've been
keeping this a secret, and they fill their boots when they go to Europe.
This is because a 100 peso coin is worth about 13 euro cents, or 12p.

I've brought back over 40 of them. :)

    Heh

I didn't bring back about ?20 quids worth of 5 shilling coin from Kenya
some years back. Exactly the same as the old 50p bit, which I obviously
didn't use in the pay and display parking bays around our office in the
police state of Westminster. Oh no!

Likewise we certainly didn't take stacks of (IIRC) old 5 pence pieces to
Berlin back in '85 as they certainly weren't identical to the 1 mark
coin of the day. And weren't worth 1/5th of the value.

  4. Those were the old pre-decimal shillings (later stamped as 5p).

I think every BAOR squaddie took a kitbag full when returning from
    leave.

heh. Turkey has something similar with the New Turkish Lira coin and
the Kurus resembling the 1 and 2 Euro coins.

  8. Similarly, prior the introduction of the Euro, I found by accident that
one of the old Italian Lira coins (unrecall which denomination, but
worthless) was 90% similar to an Irish coin of several times the value.
Many people here got them in their change and it became a game of pass
the parcel during busy shopping periods.

    would you?

  18. That thought occured to me. Also - other than the moral aspect - the
effort required isn't worth the payback. The OP's 40 fake Euros are
worth .13 Euros each. So spending all of them "saves" one less than
34.8 euros. Given that spending all at once in one shop, would look
odd and may lead to close analysis of the coins, the spending would
have to be many small purchases. For someone not living in the
Euro-zone (if that's the right expression), that's a lot of hassle.

    ;Kin right there

    capitalist bastards

    look at it another way

how much of the £1.30 (4 marks) goes in tax?

20p is closer to a realistic value for a packet if fags

not that I'd know, of course ...
