primary/secondary brake shoe question

  1. So, could asking a lunatic about how to avoid going crazy be a sort of
    homeopathic psychiatry?

only thing that really matters is teh the mounting bits. 8^) Not if
they are the same for both shoes...hell I'd have to see a picture but
I think I'd not worry as long as the mounting tabs are correct and the
braking material doesn't interfere with the other shoe. <shrug>

Ok, its a van, but its still drum braked on the rear. My vans rear shoes
display this asymmetry, and the layout is the leading shoe has friction
material closer to the cylinder ( on the bike, the cam ). Have a look for
the part number. EBC shoes, IIRC, should be fitted with the part number
facing out. Quite why that sprung to mind is beyond me, but may shed light.

That's intriguing, maybe these shoes are like bearings where the number
also is meant to face out, IIRC. But if so, then I'd guess there would
be different part numbers for the left and right on a four-wheeler.

From the brake shoe perspective, it doesn't matter whether the backplate is
on its nearside or offside, providing the mount and pivot pins line up.

Maybe there are cars/vans with different shoe sets for near and offside.
I've never come across it though. In my experience, the shoes have been
either a symmetrical pair with very simple mounting, or asymmetric with a
mounting and actuation mechanism that means you can't fit them incorrectly.

I've recently replaced the rear wheel cylinders on my van, which brought
this thread to mind. I am a bit of a packrat, and much to my wifes
frustration rarely throw anything out. I've had a look at some part worn
shoes from a variety of bikes I've owned spanning the last 25 years or so.
First thing that came to mind was when the **** am I ever going to need a
set of part worn brake shoes for a Z400 ( the oldest pair I've got ), the
second, which may have prompted the 'mount EBC shoes with the part number
outwards' is all the shoe sets have clear markings on the rear from the cam
backplate, and the part numbers on what would have been the outer face when
fitted. Again, that may just be me. As for the asymmetry of the friction
material on the OPs shoe set, I'm torn between agreeing with TOG that it is
a minor manufacturing misplacement and of no issue and thinking about how
one shoe will self servo in use. Another little thought keeps going ' It's
only the rear brake, sod it, just fit the damn things'

Perhaps sometimes we think, worry and bicker too much over minutiae. I'm
minded of the issue of eggs in Gullivers Travels. Who cares which end you
crack first, just eat the damned egg!
