I just went into Republic H-D here in Stafford (on I59 outside
Houston) to look at the new 2004 Sportsters. Looked at a real
nice 1200 Sportster Roadster in vivid black and got quoted
    $11,295 + TTL. Wow ! The MSRP is $8495 + $185 freight =
    $8680 ! $2,615 over MSRP (30% over) !

The salesman told me by paying that much that I was guaranteeing
the resale value of the sportster. Hah !

He did offer me a test ride if I was ready to make a decision today
    though.

Did you ask him how the people who paid well over MSRP felt about
their resale value on their existing Sportsters now that their value
has plummeted based on the new design?

Only thing you are guaranteeing by paying too much is to put a nice
fat commission check in his pocket and let him know it's OK to try to
    rape people.

    gee, what a guy....

  3. in a way, he's not lying. i got my road king outside of houston and
saved the $6500.00 the rapists here wanted over msrp. when i sold it
last april here in houston, i got back what i had paid for it new, which
was msrp +ttl+freight. that's the way you play the game. all the HD
dealers in the big cities in texas are thieves. for several thousand
dollars in savings, i don't mind driving a few hours to a good rural
    dealer.

have you taken the time to look at the stealers and dealers page? it's
worthwhile if you are seriously shopping HD; saves a lot of time in
    finding the good dealers.
take the test ride and tell him the price is insane. honesty never
hurts. you can rent one for a day too and really see what you think
about it. then go to a fair dealer if you still want it.

    Wow ! The MSRP is $8495 + $185 freight =
Yup. I knew it was coming when he got very serious all of a sudden.
Yup. I may check out the Russ Welch HD in Bryan if I want to
continue with a HD. I may try a used Honda Magna instead just to
make sure I want to get back into motorcycles before I blow a huge
bunch of cash on a Sportster.
Yup. http://stealer-dealer.com/ had a good review for Republic. I'll
be posting another from home, later.
They will not have a 2004 sportster for rental until Jan 2004.

    Thanks,
    Lynn

  9. Sheesh. What a scam. Yet the sheep keep going into that store...
That's a pretty transparent lie; I'd be a bit peeved if a salesdroid
thought I was dumb enough to believe that.
    What a sport.

  10. honestly they are both great bikes, they really are. the road king was
rolling art, simply beautiful if you like that sort of styling and the
flexibility in adding/removing windshield/racks/backrest was very cool.
it could be the cruiser or tourer on a whim. every time i went riding
on it i would get comments from strangers.

reasons for selling the RK and keeping the r11rt:

i had two touring bikes and the RT is more setup for the IBA competitive
rides i do from time to time. RT has better handling, brakes, power,
range, etc and it's got some tweaks for the competition aspects of
distance rallies. IF i had to have just one bike, that would be it. the
suspension is amazing and the ABS is the shiznits.

the resale value of the RK was at the point to sell it and not lose a
dime for 3 years of ownership (remember how i said to play the
    $tealership game here)

the MoCo had made substantial ugrades to the RK from the '00s to the
'02s; upgraded the FI, larger rear axle, redid the front fork
suspension, added an alarm system, etc so depreciation was going to set
    in in earnest.

the guy who told me about the buy HD outside and resell locally has been
doing that for years, he usually goes to Missouri and brings it back.
if you shop in the state and are patient you don't have to go that far,
imo. he's done that 3 times with UltraGlides. freaking works if you
know what you want and are willing to take the time to play the game.
fwiw, he's currently riding an ST1100. i'll probably get another HD at
some point, possibly a springer like Waco or perhaps something else to
just build the living daylights out of for giggles and grins.

man, this stomach thing.... ugh, feel like doggy doo again. gotta go.

  11. Reminds me of the last time I went to the local Ford dealer with a
    girlfriend.
She had a family deal with Ford so she gets a significant discount (fixed
price) on a new vehicle which generally upsets the sales guys after they
figure this out... She was trading in a 2000 model Escort in great shape.

They offered her $3k for the escort.
I knew it would come in low, but I almost spit up my drink.

I advised her to sell it herself, which she did a few weeks later.. The
sleaze ball salesman tried an interesting tactic though - he told her that
women in the area had been attacked while trying to sell their cars. Also,
he indicanted that she'd have to give up personal information to the new
owner, which could be used to locate her.. IE - stalk her at her home.

Just when you think you've heard every possible sales pitch, they come up
with a new way to swing things... I thought it was totally unethical.

She filed a complaint later with Ford motor company regarding that sales guy
and the dealer, I know they got dinged on it, but I don't think anything
    really came of it.

  12. the fad is wearing off and the fools who got raped are finding their
"investment" isn't getting much back for them. read the want-ads, there
are lots of used, very low mileage HDs around. reality sets in after a
while and deals can be had for the efficent shopper. i love reading
the want ads, there are some nice bikes available if you are patient.

in other parts of the country, more dealers are getting back to normal
pricing, and even cutting deals, as bikes stacked up on the showroom
floor. HD continues to increase production and open new dealerships
which is the only way they can deal with the problem. the MoCo make no
extra money when the dealers rape the customers and it's illegal for HD
mandate the final retail price. HD advertises the MSRP for every model
on their website and in sales materials, it's not hidden at all and the
dealers are making good profits at that price.

at the same time, why in the world ppl around here are so stupid as to
put up with being raped i do not understand. so long as that situation
exists, there is a formula to take advantage of the idiots who agree to
be bent over. go outside the area for an honest fair deal and sell it
locally to the fools when you are ready to get rid of the bike. play it
right and it costs you little to nothing to ride and that's pretty cool.

"Ride Free" takes on a whole new meaning.
    works for me.
