Typo. But why would he bother to make it official. As long as we turn up
and do our bit like good little, er...
I have more sympathy for the defenders, particularly because they were
defending my parents & grandparents, but I know what you mean.

<on> There's a Spit at kept at Filton, maintained by the lads at Airbus
I think. It often aerobats over the Cribbs causeway shopping complex, at
the side of the airfield, and I agree, it's amazing how few people
    notice.

    But that sound...

  2. Mmmyeah. Don't forget the Luftwaffe, over Germany from 1941 on, was
    doing exactly the same thing.
Oh yes. That wonderful warbling whistle. There's nothing like it. I've
never seen nor heard a Hurricane fly, so I don't know if it makes the
    same spine-tingling noise.

Thus spake The Older Gentleman unto the assembled multitudes:
About the same, I think they both used Merlins (?). People seem to prefer
the Spitfire because it was faster (?) and is a 'nicer' looking plane,
though there were far more Hurricanes built and they did the bulk of the
    B of B work.

I was at a transport fair (traction engines, tractors, old buses etc) at
Hellingly around 10 years ago and a Spitfire and Hurricane (2/3 of the
BBMF) did a display, flying repeatedly side-by-side over the showground
right over our heads a few hundred feet up. The Lancaster was supposed
to have come too but apparently had a few 'technical problems'. I was
with my German now-ex-wife and her brother, sister and brother's girlfriend
at the time. I felt an embarrassed sense of pride in telling them these
were the planes that shot up 'theirs' over the southern England skies 54
years earlier, but they loved it just as much as I did all the same. I've
only ever seen the Lancaster at a distance, up in Shrewsbury when they did
    the West Midlands Show.

  4. Oh, I know that - but I just wondered if they sounded identical.
No, more Spitfires were built, ultimately, than Hurricanes, although as
you say, there were more Hurris in the BofB than Spits.
Heh. I was in Soho when it went low over London for the 50th anniversary
of D-Day. The noise! God knows what a fleet of several hundred of them
    sounded like.

Remember going to Tern hill as a lad and watching Lancasters take off as
well as displays by Vulcans and Lightnings. Awesome.

Anyone know of any good airshows this year, within easy reach of
    Newcastle under Lyme?

I used to crave an RF4. It wasn't too pricey, either.

They always struck me as a bloody good idea, and a relatively cheap way
    into powered flying.

  12. My dear old mum (93) broke her hip in a fall a few weeks ago. She waited
8 days before she was in a fit state at the same time the operating
theatre was free. The longer they left her, the more was the pain, the
higher the blood pressure then they'd dose her to bring it down, then
    the theatre was full etc.
She's got a new hip fitted now and in rehab but the 8 day wait for the
op really took it's toll on her.

I've also discovered the nice "social" people that came to talk to her
and wanted to put her into a home rather than let her return to her own
home which is what she wants and is striving for.

"Do you own your own home or rent it"
    "Is it in good condition."
    "Is it all paid for"
"Have you nice furniture, is it all paid for"
    "Is you TV new"
"Is it paid for or rented"
"Got a bit put by for a rainy day"

Their aim at asset stripping my mum did not please me when I also heard
from one of the nurses that the "auctions" held usually have the best
items already sold to their friends.

"That one's home is full of the nicest furniture other people could
afford" was the quote that stayed in my mind.

Some social workers are scum, yes, but many of them aren't. They're just

The world turns. We used to be leaders in the wollen industry too,
