You have checked the sellers location - haven't you? TOG will be along
shortly to tell you more about this problem.

Ah, no, I live in the south bit of Holland. Belgium is not far down the road.
Waterloo would be maybe a couple of hours drive, it's somewhere around Brussels, about
    150km away.

Not Sussex, I have lived in: Peterborough, Milton Keynes (eew), Hong Kong,
Plymouth, Antwerp, Witney, and I'm presently in Zierikzee, Holland (or The
Netherlands if you prefer, but Holland is shorter!).

As someone who has played the "I'll buy that for spares game" before in
    the past...

All the bits that are worth keeping will not wear out on yours.

All the bits that are left are shagged.

Walk away. It is never worth buying anything "for spares"

Offset your Ebay spending by sending me £50 consultancy.

My last VT was bought for spares. It was cheaper to buy that than a
brand new petrol tank. It turned out the bike was better than the one
it was intended as spares for so I ran that for 2 years.

Horses for courses but knowing what you're doing in the first instance is
pretty much a prerequisite. But on the whole I think that's ill thought
    advice.

With SOBs having one for spares is a **** sight cheaper than buying bits
new or from breakers and more convenient.

You never know, the old spares machine at the back of the lockup could
end up being pressed back into service. Even after you've robbed it of
    some fundamental components.

If the one you have for spares is better than the one you are running
and you get it cheap enough then possibly. IME, if you buy something
crashed you then crash yours in an identical way and can't make use of
your donor or if you buy something with dodgy bodywork but a superb
engine, your engine will go on forever while your bodywork rots around
    it.

OK there are exceptions, but typically each type of vehicle has it's
weaknesses so whatever is wrong with the runner is likely to be wrong
    with the other.

Perhaps I'm just weary from getting rid of a load of perfectly good
stuff recently (engines, gearboxes, steering columns etc etc) that were
salvaged from donor vehicles, never to be used and of no use to anyone
else as their bits had not gone wrong either

Thank you for your sage advice ;-)
The bike looks pretty well fucked - the front end is, well, not an end
anymore. The plastic pieces which could have been useful all look to be
broken or badly scratched. The very important exhaust collector/cat.
converter looks like it may be bent (OEM is *very* expensive and mine is
    getting rusty).

I still think it would be worth buying, but not at the price the seller
appears to want. I'll have to ask him what the reserve is...

  19. Depends what.

"Because I might need the bits one day" - yeah, absolutely.

But if you're trying to rebuild or restore a wreck, it makes huge sense.

Mine Dew, that's how I ended up with three Honda CB500Ts, so maybe
    not....
