Do you or the rest of 'Rough Trade' bother to learn them?

Isn't that the musical equivalent of reading but only looking at the
    pictures?

I only learn the lines I have to sing backing vocals to. Honestly, I
have *no* idea what Phil (our singer) is singing 90% of the time.

eh? Why? It seems to me that the lyrics only play a pheriperal part
    in the whole musical experience.

Ah yes - I was forgetting you play in a pub-rock covers band!

I suppose that's why you're a guitarist? Well that and the fact it's
the most phallic instrument in a band.

It could be argued that its actually the equivalent of reading, but not
    looking at the pictures.

Not listening to lyrics is actually the equivalent of reading, but not
looking at the pictures, because it is.

Interesting, actually I think you might have something there. Nicely
    argued by the way.

I think it varies hugely. Even if you just take pure pop, think of
Ebeneezer - E's are good was a pure lyrics message that played a big
part in the song's popularity. And think Queen - and all the sad sacks
who know all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody, Another one bites the
dust, etc. Or take Pulp, and Common People, or Radiohead's I'm a creep
etc etc etc. And that's without thinking of other genres. I'd agree if
it ws only heavy metal you were talking about.

Indeed - not since Clinton 'popularized' them. Saxophony is now about as
    sexy as Crown Green Bowling.

Well if you leave out all the ones you don't see that often, you are
left with guitar, keyboards, drums, tambourine. OK, so out of that
lot, the guitar is the most phallic, but I'd still contend it's not
really _that_ phallic. Except in the player's mind, natch.

In many songs, yes. On Madonna's Ray of Light album, there's a song in
some Indian language and it matters not a jot that I don't know what
the words mean; she's using her voice as an instrument.
I disagree - that song works only because of the lyrics, IMO.
    Depends on what music.
Ah no, I did not mean the lyrics were worthless. I meant that in the
case of heavy metal, the sound is supposed to be a loud tangle of
sound, in which the lyrics play only a small part. I'm not really into
heavy metal, but I do not dislike it. And I dislike Metallica less
than some other proponents of the art.
