I'm in the process of restoring my 1968 Bonneville. What's the best thing
for coating the frame nowadays? Do I take it for powder coating, or
    respraying with paint.

..................even brush paint with TEKALOID (if I can find some)

And what are the advantages/disadvantages of either.

    Regards,
    Keith.

  2. don't know if this is any use Keith, but I had my 20yr old Honda chassis
powder coated about 2 years ago, the finish is VERY tough. Maybe not as
'shiny' as other finishes, but I guess it depends on what you're going to be
    using the bike for.

One thing I have noticed, rust is very slowly coming through where the frame
    and s/arm were corroded.

  3. Horses four courses, really, I'd go for stove enamelling myself.

  4. I'm in the process of restoring a 69 Victor Special and recently faced
the same decision. In the end I've decided to (brush) paint it with
International Brightside, which is a yacht enamel.

I was going to go for powder coating. The main thing that put me off
was that I'd have had to replace the silentbloc bush, which is made of
rubber and would have degraded in the p-coater's oven. Apparently
they're a bugger to replace. The second thing that put me off is that
with p coating if you chip it yer facked - no way to touch it up.

Painting it myself I can take all the time I want to prep and paint it
and get it exactly as I want.

Powder coating in an expensive con.

Stove enameling is an expensive con.

    Get yourself a can of Hammerite(Smooth) and a good horse-hair 1"
brush.Grind-off/Rub off all rust and apply. If you want to be really
sure with corrosion get some,"Acid 8#"
    http://www.por15.co.nz/Data Sheets/acid8_etch_primer.htm

However if you ring round your local,"Trade" Automotive paint
dealers in the,"Yellow Pages" you can get the self same stuff(Ask for
Acid-Etch) at a 3rd of the price of the Acid 8 name brand as one of
then will do their own brand. In paid £11.99 UKP until I found this
out.Now I pay £4.95 for the same Aerosol Primer ;-)

Once done lay some of this on the bike,

Corrosion is a thing of the past :)
