Potholes aren't just for denting wheel rims

It was a busy high street. I was on the ST3 bimbling along in traffic and
doing on more than 20mph as there was no way through. I was feeling relaxed
and carefree in the sunshine - right up to the point where the front wheel
dropped into a pothole. The jolt caused me to lurch forward - which caused
my right hand to twist the throttle - which caused the front end to come up
whilst my arse slid back on the seat almost causing me to lose my grip on
the handlebars. Fortunately I regained control before ploughing into the car
in front. From carefree to sphincter-clenching terror in 0.5 secs.

It's hard to understand how luching forward would cause you to open
the throttle, as turning it away from you closes it. Also, can you
clarify whether or not you ploughed into the car in front?

Hope you're OK whatever the outcome. I agree, it's hard to keep an eye
out for potholes when you're busy scanning further up the road. It's
quite bad here in Australia where the road surface seems to have
melted at some point and caused a narrow, long hump that follows your
direction of travel. It can send you badly off course.

I guess it was lurch forward and down, hence the throttle opening. Frankly,
I didn't have time to analyse what happened. As for the car in front - I
wouldn't be saying that I had regained control if I had actually ploughed
    into it.

"I regained control before ploughing into the car in front " does
imply that the one thing happened followed by the pther.

  5. Bit of a failing in the English language there. "I regained control
_therefore avoiding_ ploughing into the car in front " is a bit long winded.
