**** me, time flys. Just over a month till holiday in Ireland.

"Americas version for sale only in North America; European version for
    sale only in Europe".

I wonder what the differences are (other than the maps). Will my US
    version work in Ireland?

It will do, but you won't have the integrated basemap for the region.
So would have to download all required maps.

Looking at the Garmin site, they're pretty basic kit.

From the 5th to the 12th. It's a guided tour[1] of the Island, Dublin,
Killarney, Newmarket-On-Fergus, Galway, Derry, Kingscourt and back to
    Dublin.

[1] I know, but it involves much Guinness and Bushmills so I don't GAF.

I did OK with just a single map of California - not even a tank bag: just

Whereabouts are you planning to go? I assume it's going to be starting
from San Francisco/Monterey? If so, then I can recommend Dubbelju
    Motorcycles for bike hire.

That's what I did last time. In fact, the map I had wasn't even a
proper one - just a fold-up thing from the tourist office.

I just thought I'd give the GPS a whirl.
I don't really know yet, but yeah - that's the general idea. The
coast road south is very picturesque, isn't it. I went north last
    time.
    Cheers. <looks>

Ah. I was thinking about a Fat Boy (appropriately enough), and these
fellows have a rather inadequate selection.

This crowd had a shit-lode[1] when I used them

[1] This is the correct plural for a bunch of Harleys isn't it?

That's who I'm looking at. Now, Fat Boy or Electra-Glide?

They've got a shop a couple of streets South of Market, as I remember.

I used http://www.harleymc.com/ who were superb, really nice people,
but a fair old cab ride out of town to pick the fucker up.
    Absolutely!

    IIRC I had a dyna-glide.

Nice enough bike really but the feet forward position meant my right leg
was close to the airbox... which vibrated like a bastard and kept
vibrating against the inside of my knee.

If I had lots of money (and a man to look after my bikes) I'd have a
Harley just for the noise they make.
Dunno, I used the one in San Jose.

I try to stay clear of South of Market if I can; south of Mission
definitely; it's all a bit too scary for me.
    Thank **** for that.

If I had ten bikes, one would be a Harley.

The little ones are pretty cheap, really.
Yeah, it's buzzy, isn't it. I love it (but I'm a city boy, and I
    fantasise about being "bad").

I know what the 'G' stands for.:p Garmin show two different versions,
and I wouldn't put it past the Gest^H^H^H Homeland Security to do
something to disable operation outside your 'home' area.

One thing to be wary of is the variation in mapping detail. I downloaded
the N.Ireland map onto my US-basemapped Garmin and was surprised to find
that there was very little detail on it.

If you visit the Garmin site you can look at the Mapsource maps
