Anybody done one?? What did you think of it?? http://scrapheapadventureride.com.au/
I haven't done one yet but I'm considering doing the next one. I've been looking around for a cheap trail bike as a starting point, I found an XT250 with a good motor and decent tyres for $800 but it's got smashed instruments (literally smashed to pieces from an off road crash) and the electrics aren't working. To be honest I'd rather a tired motor and a straight bike so I'm still looking but there aren't a lot of sub $1000 trail bikes out there and most of them aren't just cosmetically challenged (which would be ideal) or with minor but fixable faults (which would do), they tend to have major issues (at least the ones I've found so far) but I'll keep looking. I haven't done one yet but I'm considering doing the next one. yea couple of mates are intertested too.. I see Damige has a few XR's at home now too... yea, been surfin trading post and more but people want top $ for wrecks... Not sure how serious these people are. XT with a big Tank be suitable.. or is it supposed to be more of a bits and pieces bike? same. Does it have to be trail?? how about a cheapy roadbike, old CB400 Hawk or something? Few on 'the bay, but are in Qld
You'd be surprised how far a solid XT would take you with decent tyres and some freshened up suspension. I'd expect that it'd get places that my KLR650 wouldn't (and it's pretty well fully farkled). I don't think they'd care what you rode, they even say you can ride your own bike if you can't find or build something suitable. I expect that a bitsa bike might be more of a talking point on the ride but I certainly can't see a cheaply restored older trail bike being a problem. There is an old XR with a big tank registered for the ride (with some non XR bits I think) so I can't see an XT or XL or KLR being a problem. An old roadie would probably be easier to find in ok condition but it would require more work to make it comfortable for light off roading. It's certainly possible and I've looked at things like GN250's and SR250's but I'd prefer something with more suspension travel personally (I'd got a crook back). You would have the advantage of electric start (not to be dismissed easily!), starting a kick start bike on a cold morning can be a bitch. Don't let me stop you if that's the way you want to go. Yah, there's one I'm keeping an eye on one that might be suitable but it's still got a couple of days to go. G-S
Not the one in Attwood? 250 will struggle to move with me on it, going from memory of my old DR250 I had on my L's 500yrs ago..
