They melt away into a puddle of disorganised electrons when they
detect a WebTVer attempting to retrieve them.

Thus spake unto the assembled multitudes:
Probably all depends on the setup on your ISP's server. Postings in
newsgroups have to be 'expired' on their host servers on a regular basis to
free up disk space. The length of time postings hang around is entirely up
to the newsgroup system managers. It may be that yours expires articles
sooner than some others (or your ISP's system manager hates SOBs ;-)
Many of the newsgroups on my server, for example, expire their postings the
same day as they appear. That was one of my innovations ;-)

The short answer is that they don't. If you access google groups
(start at www.google.com, go to Advanced Search, then type the full
name of the deired group) you will find all the posts archived - for
years (or as long as the group has been active).

As you are reading the group through WebTV - which I'll freely admit I
know buggerall about - then your situation is a little, shall we say,
strange. The length of time posts remain readable is a function of
the retention period of the news server you are using and the settings
on your news reader. A decent server will retain text (non-binary)
posts for several weeks in the case of a comparatively low-volume
    group such as this one.

If your newsreader has an optional setting to "hide read posts" then
this may be your problem. Unhide them and they will reappear. I'd go
and read your service provider's FAQ, if I were you.
