possible bike electrics problem?

  1. Hi,

Yesterday my bike decided that i was indicating to much and put a stop
    to it.

every single light in the bike blew, Head lights, tail lights (stop and
    tail) indicators (possibly something else)

there seems to be like a burn capisitor (something else maybe) smell under
the seat but i cannot pinpoint where.
the bike also seems to run on what seems to be Less cylinders or something
similar. like starving for fuel. after the revs pick up,
which brings me on to another point, the taco is not working either.

i check a small fuse box (approximately 4 - 5 fuses none of them are
blown.... something that says digital ignitor i took this out and it does
not appear to smell funny (couldn't open it up without breaking it)

bike is an FZR600 1991 model

    located in melbourne

is there a few things i can try before taking it to a professional... and if
i do take it to a professional is there such thing as a bike auto
electrician or do you just take it to a bike shop (so far i've had good work
performed at Pro Moto, so if i cannot fix it myself i will go there)

    thanks

    Robbie

Have to agree with Paul on this one, but I'll give you the laymans version
of what happened so you have at least some understanding when the bike shop
    tries to talk shit.

There is only one thing that causes bulbs to blow, the voltage regulator,
and on the Fizzers the stock regulators are shit. The voltage regulator
takes the 90+ AC volts from your alternator (the actual voltage varies, but
my Fizzer had an unregulated voltage around 90) and converts it to a usable
voltage for your 12V DC electrical system.

Regulators blow regularly on old Fizzers, I went through 3 before buying a
bigger after market one which worked a treat. When they blow they usually go
open circuit, which means no power goes through it and eventually you'll
drain your battery. The other thing that can happen is it goes short
circuit, which means the raw alternator voltage goes through your system.
    12VDC bulbs don't like 90VAC.

You need to have the regulator replaced by someone who knows what they're
doing, and then replace the bulbs and check the wiring harnesses for damage.
If there is any burnt insulation it can short against the frame sooner or
later, and you'll be stuck one night on the freeway. Take it to the bike
shop, you'll have to eventually. Whatever you decide, DO NOT buy a standard
FZR regulator from a wreckers. Learned all this by painful experience a few
months back. Ymmv, best of luck.

  4. ok that makes perfect sense because the battery has also been going flat
    sometimes and charging up others.

bike shop it is... but it really helped to understand the problem, and i
will take it to a bike shop.

thanks again for the help, at least now i can go in there and say fix this,
rather then, what is wrong with it (which = screw me over)
