Popping on overrun

    Hello sweethearts.

Mr. ER-5 is starting to develop a 'popping' noise when I go down hard
on the overrun which it never used to do.

My general riding style is high revving (especially when I've gone out
to play) so I do use the overrun to slow down and have done for well
over 10,000 miles. I few months ago on the way back home I heard some
gentle popping while I was on the overrun on the way back up my road
and it did it regularly today while slowing down after bouncing it off
the rev limiter while on a 50 mile hoon.

It's due for a service in about 2,500 miles (before the French run in
late May) and from what I've read here over the last year the general
suggestion is adjusting the valve clearances(?) which I assume is what
needs to be done with the ER-5 when it hits the 25,000 mile service.

Does that sound like a reasonable assumption and is it likely to be
expensive as I'll mention it as part of the service. Should I get it
done now, or should I wait for a couple of thousand miles to pass?

The exhaust has been fucked for ages. Tweets like a canary which I
understand is a feature of the ER-5.

BGN emerged from their own little world to say
could be the valves; might also be a leaky exhaust allowing air into the
system so that the unburnt fuel from the overrun detonates. Check for
corrosion or a loose joint in the system.

An exhaust leak is much, much more likely than valve clearances. Needs
sorting as it can **** up the mixture.

  5. BGN expressed precisely :

Isn't the exhaust supposed to leak?

  8. BGN laid this down on his screen :
Only at the far end :)

A leak mid way allows air to be drawn in which can trigger the unburn
mixture to burn, hence the popping noise.

    Sounds good imho.

    I'd leave it.

Cover the noise up by doing lots of KSBs.

    You should.

It's very irresponsible but it's good fun.

Is there a speed that this should be done at? If, later on day, I
find a clear piece of straight road and I'm doing 40mph I just leave
the clutch alone and throttle open as normal, flick the kill switch
off for a second and then flick it on leaving the throttle open it
    should do it?

Not speed so much as revs. Make sure you're engine is revving enough so
that when you flick the switch back on, you've got enough grunt to get
you back up and running again.

This is how to do it (or rather, how I do it)

Rev the engine anything between 5,000rpm and the redline, shut the
throttle and flick the kill-switch, when the revs die down to somewhere
slower, flick the switch back on again.

    *Bang*)

When you've done a few, you'll get a feel of how and when it can be
    done.
