Looking for advice here from anyone in the know.

Basically, the lammy engine is out of the scooter and on the bench as ive
got a bit of work to do to it.
Now that its out of course, christ theres a lot of crap on it, 44 years
worth by the look of it.

So, the casings aluminium , covered in cack and needs cleaning.
Ive already gunked it, then scraped the most of it off but it all still
    looks dirty.
Im not looking to polish it or owt, im not that vain [1]

So, anyone got any tips or tricks to clean it up a bit more? I do have a
dremel type tool if theres a mechanical [2] way to do it.

[1] cue the "obviously not, as youre a scotta boi" lot :)
    [2] for mechanical read lazy

The only obviously not about you is that you are obviously not a scoota
boi. Vanity goes with the territory, for you it is just "wannabe"

Oh yes nearly forgot: solvents and elbow grease.

Soak it in a strong caustic soda solution.

Overnight, minimum. Best if yopu could do it one evening and leave it
till the following evening, really. That'll dissolve all the shite
    away lovely.
