    Hi

When it comes to buying a polish for a new bike are there any that
should be avoided? looking through shelfs of them on the weekend it's
confusing trying to get one that is good to use on finishes that are
    new.

    Could someone recommend some brands?

Products from Meguires and Mothers are the best to stick to.

Go to a decent Auto Shop and have a look at some of them and ask a few
questions. If it's a new bike you can steer well clear of any cut type
polishes. You'll want something along the lines of a cleaner, and a
finishing wax. Buy a mild polish for when you need to get the more stubborn
    stains or minor scratches out.

3M Imperial Hand Glaze is bloody good shit to put on as a top coat. The more
you put on, the deeper it gets. It doesn't cotain any silicones either, so
it's good for when you may need to respray panels.

I purchased Polyglaze liquid polish - hard.
    Contains Polymer/Silicone combination
    Haven't used it yet.

I have been told by a mechanic that this is ok but the only issue is
if the paint needs touching up because silicone has been used the new
    paint doesn't take as well.

He recommended a polish without silicone and using a wax for extra
    protection.

Did you ask a spray-painter what oil you should use?
