    Police nab 220km/h motorcycle daredevil
    February 17, 2004

AN elusive daredevil whose motorcycle was clocked repeatedly at up to
220km/h in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel has finally been nabbed by police.

Operation Knievel was set up to catch the biker, who over several weeks
allegedly rode at speeds of between 159km/h and 220km/h in the 80km/h
tunnel. He was always clocked on weekdays between 4.30am and 5.40am (AEDT).

The speedster was detected originally by stationary cameras in the tunnel
but proved difficult to identify because he obscured his number plates, said
police, who named their operation after the US motorcycle stuntman Evel
    Knievel.

A concerted effort to apprehend him was mounted yesterday, with police
officers waiting at the tunnel's entrance and exit and on the Warringah
    Freeway.

However, the Evel Knievel wannabe still eluded them, taking police on a 5am
pursuit at alleged speeds of more than 200km/h at the tunnel's exit and then
    on the Warringah Freeway.

The chase was terminated because of safety concerns.

But the numbers on the motorcycle's licence plate eventually proved the
    daredevil's undoing.

Officers saw some of the numbers, and investigations led to a 31-year-old
Cronulla man who worked at Lane Cove.

Police arrested him and seized his motorcycle.

He was charged with five counts of speeding, speeding in a dangerous manner,
failing to stop and five counts of obscuring a number plate. Police said
they expected to lay further charges.

He will appear at Hornsby Local Court on March 9.

On 13/2/2004, Spam Survivor said "I'm a big fan of speed cameras. I think
they're really cool. Catches lots of psychos who want to kill me. I think
getting killed would hurt. Most yukkies." I have some sympathies with this
    view.

He is obviously a dill as already said. Having to catch the train and/or
bus will give him some contemplation time.

....at least he can argue that if he did it every day, and still didn't die, it
    couldn't have been *that* dangerous.

Was he making ghost rider Down Under?

I think the guy would have got the shock of his life when he bumped into the
cops at 4:30 am, he wouldn't have expect it. Would love to see the footage
from the cop cars. With any luck it will be on the news.

  13. Well what they have to prove is that it was dangerous to the public - are
there pedestrians in the tunnel, no

but what they can prove is the amount of traffic reasonably expected at that
time of day, when he did it it could have been no traffic, but if it was
expected 2-3 cars could be using it at that time, then they can get up on
    it...

Somehow I think his licence is going to be in the shredder for a few years
    at the very lease..

I hope everyone learns from his actions ;-)

Let's hope not. The last thing we need are the general public thinking we all
need speedlimiters and sundry other stupid limitations.

I'm surprised the cops didn't shoot him, then
post a press release saying "See! We told you
    speeding was dangerous"

    That's a bit excess.

Yah. Don't be so consistent, vary your times and travel
directions when speeding through the tunnel. Obscure
    *all* of your number plate.
