Police Motor Cycles (Victoria)

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Erik Vastmasd, Sep 18, 2008.

  1. I can't remember the last time I saw Police on motor cycles in Victoria.

Can anybody advise if Victorian Police still use motor cycles and if so
what brand of motor cycle do they now use.

    They are there in force
BMW's mainly and the occasional stealth bike unmarked.

    Hi Erik,

Totally unrelated to your question (sorry!) I was thinking about the posts
you sent in before about bike races - are you going to PI this year?

Don't know about Vic or elsewhere but motorcycle-mounted Police are
getting very scarce in WA. Occupational Health and Safety frown on
Police working alone now. Motorcyles are used for some escort work and
the bikes are used by officers to get to and from work. They may stop
and issue infringements to motorists on the way to work. When they get
to work, they park the bike and get in the Commodore for the day.

  7. Dude... seriously. Your arse, broomstick, remove. You're posting to a
newsgroup, not following up on a loan application.

VicPol do so very much still use bikes; R1200RT's seem to be what they
got the best volume discount on...

Don't think it has got anything to do with volume discount
The Vic Police started using BMW bikes in the mid 1950's
right after the Ariel Square 4's and an array of other brands,
They have also tried different bikes from Honda's to Harleys

the BMW is the more reliable bike for what their needs are, so they chose
    that

Come on George, they aren't that smart. It's all about kickbacks.
WA Police went from BSAs to Kawasaki W1s to Kawasakis 900s to
MotoGuzzis (circa 1975-1985) to Yamahas, to (would you believe)
Harleys, to BMW K750 triples and are now riding Honda ST1100-1300s.
Obviously all chosen for needs and reliability.

  10. Not in my part of Perth. I see them on the freeway every night. Used
paired up with the speed gun out on an on ramp.

IIRC, the Vic Pol stopped using Honda ST's a few years back because
the pannier system was only rated to 130kmh or some low speed that
    made next to useless..

  12. Next time I go shopping I'll buy some new handkerchiefs so I can
properly clean my glasses. I'll probably be able to see them then. :)

  13. Thanks for the info, it must be just the part of Melbourne I live in
because we never see them around here.

  14. Thanks and I was rather surprised when I read the "occasional stealth
bike unmarked". I've been booked by Police in an unmarked car and I had
never given a thought to the possibility of unmarked motor cycles.

  15. Hi betty,

No I'm afraid going to PI is not possible for me at the moment.
I'll be there in spirit though as I sit in front of the TV.

I was booked by an unmarked bike when I used the emergency lane to avoid
    a near pileup

I think in every Honda owner manual it says not to exceed 130kph with
any sort of luggage or baggage attached to the bike.

Well, considering the warning would have already been there when the
police tested and bought the bikes it must not have been considered to
be a problem.. so I'd say initially the general warning was ignored, or
Honda advised VicPol that it was just a general disclaimer, then there
must have been some sort of incident which occurred at high speed which
was then discussed with Honda who would have pointed at the warning in
the manual, regardless of what the cause and result of said incident may
    have been.
