Hello Bill I'm over in Holywood. I used to work for BMW in the UK when
police bikes were BMW. You take an already heavy bike, load it up with
more gear, particularly at the rear end and instability at some critical
speed / bump frequency is highly likely. Did the Force or Honda equip
the bikes with steering dampers? we used to put the K75S fluid block
dampers into the steering heads of some bikes. The old Craven luggage
used to move around and make matters worse. Tyre choice/wear/pressure
    had an impact too.

I thought it was a bad idea to go with the Honda. The latest BMW
telelever front ends impart much greater stability under load although
I'm sure the Honda is now more reliable.

    ..

    Cheers Hog

Yup, hard to argue with any of that, BMW is bouncing to get back in the
act, some one up in Belfast must be on a back hander.

Honda gave them 7 of the old 1100's with the crap brakes before health and
safety put an end to that, and the brembo linked system made a hell of a
    difference.

No, strangely no dampers. If you saw my 'blog' you'll see that all the
bikes are being checked by some boffin that doesn't even ride. Such is life
    in Blairs world

The 1100 weighs in at 287 kgs with all the kit, tyre pressures have to be
checked before taking it out but like I said-the old bike is very solid on
the road, the 1300 is very much lighter.

    Thanks for reply

    Bill

I was informed yesterday that, sadly, a GMP rider was killed recently
whilst training. No details on cause, however, although the comment in
your blog that "The whole UK Police fleet including that of my own
force, the PSNI has been withdrawn" gives rise to assumptions.

A nice Triumph wouldn't go astray! The new Sprint is impressive.
A loaded heavy bike like that needs an adjustable steering damper if you
are going to ride hard on NI bumpy roads at over 80mph, as if ;o)
It isn't wildly excessive for a fully loaded touring bike.
I took an ex UK Police Escort K1100LT in 2001, fitted the fluid block
steering damper, Progressive Suspension fork internals and an Ohlins
shock with adjustable ride height. Some careful assembly, new wheel
bearings and decent radial tyres and I had an incredibly stable plot
fully loaded at <cough> any speed. EBC HH pads turn the 4 piston ABS2
Brembos into tyre squealing monsters. An important part of the mods was
to change the handlebar mounting to a more rigid design. Tiny
oscillating steering inputs through long handlebars are a major cause of
    cornering weaves.

Anyway, I thought they had all you guys on Honda Transalps with knobbly
    tyres now?

BTW do you know anything about the Garda sending Fixed Penalty NIP's to
Northern drivers? what's the gen on this?

I know Holywood very well. Considering I spent three years in Palace
Barracks and went to Redburn Primary School. :)

Local station bikers ride the transalp and the Deau Ville. I'm a road rat
( Traffic ) (spit) so we have the 1100 the 1300 and a couple of Blackbirds.

The Gards dont have the human rights act so if you dont pay a ticket issued
in the republic they send the fine to a uk debt recovery agency which is a
civil matter. You dont pay that they screw your credit rating--- you ave
    been warned!

FFS, no cameras we trust. Yon black Evo estate thing with the blacked
    out windows is bad enough
I'm gobsmacked that this is legal. In fact I doubt it is supportable.

Criminal law is one thing- civil law is quite another. we could not do it
in the UK but they are going to the small claims court and getting away with
it, give it a run if you want.

Well yes, the assumption being that we aren't riding them on operational
duty until a senior officer puts his name on a piece of paper covering any
life changing incident affected by official issue kit.

If you ever had experience of military or public service you would
understand my point. They issue the kit -they stand over it !!

  20. The assumption being that the fatal accident in question might have
been caused by the circumstances described in the OP.
