Mercedes saloons can comfortably cross speed bumps at twice the speed limit.
At least company cars can. I don't know about privately owned Mercs.

Yeah, some people do slow down way too much, but many 4x4s have really
stiff suspension, despite the higher articulation. SWB ones are the
worst because they pitch badly too.

A well sorted[1] Citroen BX was just the job for such things.

*sigh* I miss my Citroen with proper suspension.

[1] If such a thing exists now; according to eBay it doesn't seem to.

I had many CX's which I loved. My friend is on his 2nd Xantia, which
he also likes - I thought they have the same suspension?

They do, ish. As does the XM. However it's the BX I yearn for.

It sends out a message: I have this impressive car but no clue how
    to drive.

It's not only the urban 4X4 that is strange. Why do so many Germans
want the biggest possible behemoth of a car when driving on gravel
roads in mountains? 90% of the time grip is no problem on gravel,
meeting other traffic (especially other "adventurers" in lorry-wide
    "off road" cars) is.
We met a superb example some years ago on Hardangervidda in Norway.
The thing was built on a Unimog chassis and had an even wider holiday
house on the rear. It must have made them crazy reversing or looking
at others reverse to find a wide spot every time they met another car.
The thing would have made some sense in a flat desert.

They way I read that, it suggested that the OP appears to be only
against the useless ones. Or possibly the useless ones and the ones
    that never get used properly.

My kids are at a private school, down a ****-off long drive which has
several humps in it. Some of the mothers crawl through in their gigantic
hubby-company-issue Tonka Toys, inching gingerly over each obstacle as if
they're in the High Atlas. I enjoy thundering across them in my SOCitroen,
and not even causing the CD player to skip. This is deep in the country, by
the way, so there is *some* reason for them owning a 4x4. Still, 3 years
ago when the merest dusting of snow came down, the school damn nearly closed
for the day because so many of the froth-heads were terrified to drive in
    the apparently terrifying weather conditions.

Needless to say, when there's only one to deliver/collect - which
lift-sharing makes rare - we go by bike and he's the coolest kid in the
    car-park.

We did this topic quite recently. The (obvious) answer is that big 4x4s
have /much/ stiffer suspension than cars due to their greater weight &
higher CoG. Therefore whilst they are capable of taking bumps at speed
without breaking, it's a far from comfortable experience.

Dad did take me a few times on his Black Shadow though. And I took my

[1] The headmaster was not at all impressed as I wandered into the
    school hall with her.

That Lotus was about as cool as a Hillman Avenger.
When Lotus make ugly, they do it exceptionally well.

I suspect you're probably right. It's been almost 20 years since it
moved a wheel and I can remember it being a bit "temperamental" at the
    best of times.
