<chuckle> Damned if I remember the context .. When I subscribed to
rec.motorcycles newsgroup, it was in response to another of their flame wars
that about seven of them cross posted on tx.motorcycles.. When I introduced
myself on that group, part of it was "I didn't come to make friends and
influence people"..and the war was on..

The silly mess raged back and forth since January, and occasionally someone
like this Andrew clown, who was involved in the cross posted fiasco that
started it, keeps trying to advise me of how to make friends with those
guys.. I have to keep reminding them, that I'm not interested in making
friends.. although I have in fact made a few, since this has been going on..
There were seven who were originally involved and I named them in my
"intro".. A very few more have joined in, but the genuine and serious
contributors on rec.motorcycles do not share their motto.. "Live to Flame
and Flame to Live".. Regards Bjay..

No one in rec.motorcycles was the least bit upset by the fact that VTX1800C
crossposted into reeky.

The point of the clarification was that:

1. A thread in tx.motorcycles was going just fine all by itself in
tx.motorcycles
2. rec.motorcycles got added to the distribution
3. many people on rec.motorcycles who hadn't seen the thread on tx.motorcycles
could now see it
4. most people who respond in their "home" newsgroup simply press the "reply"
button and often don't even KNOW that what they are posting is going out to more
than one newsgroup.
5. Flames started in the (now crossposted) thread
6. I never did any research on who started the flames, because by the time the
flames began burning, the thread was firmly ensconced on BOTH tx.motorcycles AND
rec.motorcycles.
7. Very shortly after this, Bill Walker stated that he did not know who started
the cross posting.
8. Right after saying he didn't know who started it, Bill began a flamewar in
rec.motorcycles (that rages to this day) in which he accused a band of
rec.motorcycles people of coming into tx.motorcycles, crossposting, and starting
a flamewar.
9. Bill announced that he was going to "clean up" rec.motorcycles, "expose" the
cross posters, and spread hatred and discontent in rec.motorcycles, and that he
wasn't there to make friends or influence people, and that "regular" and
"genuine" rec.motorcycles regulars had nothing to "fear" from him.
10. Bill then proceeded to post over 1,000 messages into rec.motorcycles in
January, and over 300 so far in February, in his self proclaimed role of High
Sheriff of reeky.

The messages that I googled, copied, and posted simply documented the fact that
the crossposting that got Bill so upset did not originate with some "band" of
reeky regulars, but did, in fact, originate in tx.motorcycles.

rec.motorcycles folks don't get upset when people cross post from
alt.motorcycles.sportbike, ba.motorcycles, tx.motorcycles,
rec.motorcycles.harley, or any other motorcycle-related newsgroup.

A number of us "genuine" and "regular" posters to rec.motorcycles do take
offense when someone from outside the group comes busting in, proclaims that
he's in charge, that he's going to "clean up" the place, and then proceeds to
trash the place in a way - all props to him - has NEVER been seen before in the
history of the group.

I guess since I'm eighth on the list of "All time top posters" to
rec.motorcycles, I qualify as a "genuine" and "regular" poster to the group.
When I pointed out the inconsistencies in Bill's claims, he immediately focused
on me, and has remained fixated on me ever since.

That's fine, I can take the heat. He hasn't ridden as long as I have, hasn't
lived in the same place as long as I have, and hasn't been on usenet as long as
I have (all things he's bragged about repeatedly as some way of establishing his
'bone fides'), but that hasn't prevented him from calling me a liar, a phony, a
wannabe, and a rookie.

The "Sheriff" is a phony, a blowhard, and gives dangerous riding "advice"
couched in terms and cloaked in caveats so as to deflect criticism when he's
called on it.

I'll be visiting old Bill on either July 3rd or July 4th on my way to the USGP
in California, and I've told him I'm going to ride circles around him, and he's
agreed to ride with me. We'll see if the "Sheriff" keeps his word or not.

First, the few "friends" he has "made" in rec.motorcycles are artificial
constructs. If Bill had the means or inclination to do research (which he
proudly proclaims he doesn't do) he would have noted that the "folks" kissing
his butt and urging him on in reeky *never* posted to *any* newsgroup prior to
his little flamewar. In fact, a sharp-eyed reader *might* deduce certain clues,
terms, naming and style conventions that *could* be used to identify the usenet
sharpies that are throwing fuel onto the raging flamewar fire. H'mmmmmmm... now
how would little old Timmie know anything about that? Maybe little old Timmie
has been in a flamewar or two in the past?

Second, "Live to Flame and Flame to Live" is, always has been, and always will
be the trademark of the Denizens of Doom, who are Reekyites first and foremost,
and is the property MOST ASSUREDLY of all "genuine and serious" contributors to
rec.motorcycles, and those who don't subscribe to it are typically phony,
wannabe newbies who can't be bothered to find out anything about the long and
storied history of Reeky.
