Hey, whilst we've got the attention of the umh-c (that doesn't look
right...) tv-isti, can anyone assist me with setting up my Tosh 32ZD26P?

I've hooked it all up to my PC via a decent quality s-video/SCART lead
and used Nvidia's nview tool to set up 1280x720 res, etc.

It's a 100Hz prog-scan box so I was kinda anticipating being able to get
a slightly crisper, sharper picture out of it than I'm getting...

I'm using Microsoft's "generic television" .INF file at the mo which I'm
assuming is 4:3 only so is probably not ideal. Nview has the ability to
set custom synch timing settings such as Horizontal & Vertical "Front
porch", "Back Porch", "Synch width" and "Synch polarity" none of which
mean a great deal to me other than "Touch these and fry your TV"...

I think I need a custom .INF file... Advice?

  4. In uk.rec.motorcycles, madmax amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
DVDs cost about twice that but you might get two cheesy VHS films for
    that, I suppose.

Done any picture mode adjustments on the TV? (Sharpness, black level, white
    level, saturation, hue)

I've got the Tosh 36Z-thingy, & could never get a decent picture with
an NVidia card. The solution was to get an ATI card, & now everything's
    hunky dory.

  7. Yes I've got one - it's great and I haven't even tried HD yet - see my
review under the "Opinions on Panasonic TH42PV500" thread.

Better quality pictures for the crap you watch on TV.
It will cost you thousands to replace all your existing LD technology to
HD. The programmes will still be crap.

Mine certainly does, picture quality is way better than the 32" flat
    screen Sony it replaced.

  10. you can, but most are 1080i - 720p's main advantage is the full distinct 60
frames (or 50 for uk) per second - great for sport and video material - but
irrelevant with movies because they are only 24fps to begin with so nothing
    is gained.
therefore for movies 1080i is best (until 1080p sources appear of course -
blu ray and hi def dvd are rumoured to store the movie as 24 1080p frames
    per second.

Oh aye, black-stretch on/off, Digital Noise Reduction on/off. Don't have
a white-level adjustment, but did follow some
destruc^H^H^H^H^Hinstructions that had me winding the contrast right up
on the set and then adjust it back down through the video-card's
software. Kind of worked but messed the set up for normal telly
    watching. Was nowhere near perfect.

Hmmm...I've heard it said that the Nvidia signal is very strong so I had
a twiddle with the "overdrive" slider and reduced it. It just made all
the colour and definition wash out.

Thing is, it's an otherwise excellent card and although I'd like a 256MB
job (mine's a "baby" 128MB), I'd have a job justifying the expense right
now. Besides, my next upgrade's going to be PCI-E and SLI, but let me
finish paying for this rig first!

True dat. I believe most broadcasters in the US and UK (including the
BBC) have been filming in HD for some time.

Here in Texas I have 6 HD channels over the air, and the quality is
    stunning.

In the UK then the only HDTV is from P2P sharing? So you get to see
the next season of the Sopranos a few months earlier and in HDTV,
sounds good. But what to watch it on? I'm guessing from what you say
its in 1080i so thats 1920x1080 native res. From a quick look on the
internet, the plasmas that can display that native cost USD50k and
there are a few projectors >USD20k apparently. LCDs are much cheaper
but at the >23" size seem to suffer from smearing etc the DELL one (
UKP700) is discounted, but heavely slagged by reviewers for its
displaying of TV. Seems the display technology is not quite there at
the moment. If you want to watch HDTV you'd be beter off with the
biggest CRT computer monitor with HDMI connections.

BTW the HDTV rips you've seen are they the full mpg stream or have
they been "captured" somehow you know d/a then A/D (or something)?

  18. most people will watch them on a 720p screen - sure a 1080 one is nicer
still, but with the pc scaling them to 720 it does look a whole lot better
than the crappy broadcasts we have to put up with.

most are the full stream - gladiator is over 20 gig for example, although i
have seen a few that have been wmv encoded to a size that can be stored on a
    dvd - like terminator 3.
they still look good although i've not looked at them THAT closely - but i
guess original transport stream is the way to go.

  19. if i owned a games company, i'd slap any programmer that came up with such a
system requirement - dont they realise selling as many copies as possible is
the aim? - is it really coincidence that the sims will run on a feeble pc
and is the best selling game ever?
