I'm looking for a decent Plasma TV, I like this one:
    http://shop.panasonic.co.uk/invt/th42pv500cab

It has great reviews and looks the dogs..
I've seen one running a HDTV input and it is spectacular.[1]

Anybody have one? Have a reason to not get one?
    Or have an alternative?
    All comments/abuse welcome ;-)

[1] Sky are going to start HDTV transmissions next year?[2]
[2] Although I don't think they will have HD cameras at the MotoGP's for
a while, but ye never know...

  2. main thing is the resolution is only 1024x768 - that's not enough to fully
resolve even a 720p hi def image - which is something like 1280x720

sure it's better than standard definition but it's a lot to pay for a screen
    that's not quite there.

I don't see an HDMI input, in which case it is already obsolete and
should be avoided like the plague.

What is quite there then? For around 2-2.5k ish? Which is what you can
get that Panasonic for., depending on stand/dealer.

It says in the Panasonic catalogue "HDMI connectivity for the ultimate
    digital connection..to HDTV/AV sources"

It's the top of the range 42" plasma FFS. Surely it has all the
    dongles...

1k, throw the old one on ebay, anything you get for it is bunce -
    bonanza boy !

Not mentioned in the "detailed specs" although they are very proud of
the Composite Video, S-Video and Component Video connectivity.
    You would think ...

  8. plasmas never seem to be able to do full 720p resolution at under 50
inches - seems to be some kind of current technology limitation - i'd guess
the 50" panny would do it.

  9. there's plenty of hi def out there already if you know where to look
though - i've got an 8 movie backlog to get through at the moment and that's
before you even start on tv shows - and hi def in this form really does look
    great.

For half the cost I bought a great HDTV projector. 10 foot screen :)

Of course it has the obvious drawbacks, but bigbrother at lifesize is
    interresting.

As I was beginning to suspect, then, its the marketing wallahs who
don't know their inputs from their arses. Still seems like a lot of
dosh though, for a still-evolving technology, given there is limited
    HD material available.

Does it have a tuner or did you just connect it to your Sky box?
Apperently it's meant to have a freeview thing and tuner built in?

It does have a tuner and a freeview tuner built in. Haven't been able to
try the digital tuner yet, upgrading my aerial at the weekend so I'll be
able to try out freeview then.

i'll sell you them for a grand yes - better than downloading them for free i
    suppose.

Alternatives? Don't overlook the LG ones, and don't rule out a standard def
panel with a scaler - it'll be many years before there's loads of HD
broadcast (although HD movies on whatever format actually succeeds will be
here sooner) and you could save some money now on a standard def unit and
get HD when the product is more mature.

Panasonic seem to be the best, I find the picture the richest and most
vibrant of all the plasma TVs I've seen, but settled for the LG for now (and
the next five or so years)

Well Sky start broadcasting in under a year, BBC suspected to launch some
    service too then.
There is already lots of HD made for TV content - remember it is already
popular in US with most of the popular shows in HD
And Movies and sport will be there at launch. Premiership in particular will
be welcome given the poor quality of football in SD digital.
I figure there willl be plenty of content next year.

Righto, can some give me a quick run down on what HDTV is and how will it
    affect me?

I've just had my normal widescreen television repaired [1] and hope to
get another five years out of it.

[1] Colour decoder went and took the red with it.
Many, many unwell looking people on television.
