  1. Sometimes, you really need a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card:

I'm on pikey GPRS. I'll wait for someone to post a summary.

Aerobatics plane loses a wing in flight, and shoots a big parachute that
slowly takes back the plane and the pilot to the ground.

Ta. I always liked the Martin-Baker building that has a display on the
wall that incremented every time someone punched out (and
    survived ...)

I made parts at Martin Baker's years ago - 1st job I had on the IOM.

Yeah, decrementing the display might be somewhat bad for business ;-)

It looks to me like there is another parachute with the pilot that
deploys at 2:04 to the left of the plane.

(ICBW, but I'm thinking that the soundtrack by Yanni is what caused
    the crash.)

Long before - he ejected just after the wing came off. I'm not really
sure what Grimly's on about as the plane was totalled anyway.

  11. I don't think that was him ejecting, an aircraft that small wouldn't
be able to carry an ejector seat I reckon. I think what you saw flying
away from the plane was a drogue chute that drags the main chute out
    of the aircraft.

    Yup.
The remains make a remarkably soft landing.

  13. I was surprised that soft landing ended up with the aircraft in
flames, but I guess on the way down air cooling may have stopped
ignition but landing in grass with fuel pissing out of the tanks and a
hot engine was the end of it. The pilot did well to get out before it
    did go up.

I also thought he did a great job to deploy the chute that quickly
under those G forces, but considering the maneouvres he was doing
before that I guess he is used to it :)

Now that I've watched the rest of it (the slowmo bit), yes, you're
    right.

I saw a program about plane chutes a few years back - their biggest
problem was designing it so the stress of deploying the chute didnt
rip it off the plane. Apparently <60mph impact is what they are
aiming for as it is survivable (YMMV, I guess).

Maybe that chick with the glider (up there ^ )should have got one.

Sadly, they're too heavy for gliders. Given that gliders are more prone
to mid-airs[1] and (seemingly) structural failures, that's a pity.

[1] They will insist on all circling in the same thermal...

Glider pilots wear emergency chutes don't they? which are light.

True, but that means you need to get clear of the aircraft. Not always
    possible.

Oh I realise that, not much use below 500ft. I expect many accident happen
    lower.
In a jump plane 300ft is the magic number for leaving the pilot to die if it
    goes pete tong.
