Places to stay in Spain / France

  1. Quite. Good point.
Well if he's going to go that far east...
**** off, Rog; we've been through this. You invited yourself and then
whinged when I couldn't be in Paris. I even offered you free board and
lodgings to make up for it.

The only reason you got away with your pitiful whingeing was because it
was aimed at me, and the bandwagon is too atttractive for certain people
to resist putting the boot in.

Now change the fucking record; I shan't comment on this again.

And it's the first language you spoke... Maybe you shouldn't take the
piss out of Cab when he gets the odd pronunciation wrong, eh?

    Bad Des.

Actually, I don't see how anyone can make an error of pronunciation in
the written word, but that's buy the buy (1): I only take the piss out
of Cab when he posts what seem like 'authoritative' posts where he gets
it completely wrong. Like the 'EDF are civil servants' ... or the
recent, 'it's only SNCF who are on strike' ... or the, 'I think that
spamming should be controlled by legislation in France', or whatever.

Look at it this way:if I posted something on France that was
subsequently proven to be complete and utter bollocks, UKRM would have a
    field day.

That being said, I still can't believe that I put an apostrophe in
'it's'. I'd use the bottle of Château Gaillard 2002, or the spliff as
excuses, but the fact is that it was fuckwittedness.

    (1) of course it was fucking deliberate... ;-)

One of the Spanish tutors at uni was Basque - useful source of
information during my linguistics course... fascinating language..

BTW, Biarritz is a Basque name - buggered if I remember what it means,
    though

    How long you going for?

Taking it easy, you'll hit Spain in 3 to 4 days from Calais.

Enjoy the trip down, spend time exploring the Basque country and
    Catalunya, gentle pootle back...

It's worth the trip - I've been down that way on bikes a couple of
times - once the motorised sort and once the pedal-powered version.
The Landes area is one of my favourite bits down there, with loads of
forest trails, some of which are do-able even on a biggish bike -
great fun was had on my TDM850 and my mates Zephyr 1100 pissing about
    in the woods.

And if you want twisty roads, of course, the pyrenees are just a
    stone's throw away.

  9. I miss Spain. I initially took these two months unpaid leave to go down
there and learn Spanish, but decided instead to try to pass my exams.
    Bummer. :-(

  15. Why ? Much as ETA would like it to be otherwise, the Basque country is
(at least on the Spanish side) part of Spain. The Basques are thus
every bit as Spanish as say, the Jocks are British.

Just out of Santander ferry, head for places like Santander itself and
Santillana del Mar. You may consider heading a bit west and then back
eastwards for the Picos de Europa mountain range in Asturias.

I would definitely stop in San Sebastian/Donosti in the Basque Country
(Pension La Alemana is an excelent place to stay). Reason is that
Donosti area is the area in the world with more Michelin Guide stars
per habitant or per square meter. Besides the great names such as
Arzak, Subijana, Berasategi, Fagollaga, Argiñano et al, I'd suggest
tapas in the old town around Fermin Calbeton street, Sorgina Alotza is
    a bar/restaurant quite competent IMHO.

Simply said, Donosti is the gourmet's heaven. Ferran Adria's el Bulli
may be amazing for advanced and experimental kitchen, but for a
complete gastronomic experience I'd go to Donosti, and afterward feel
that I can die in peace of mind and stomach :)

  20. ISTR that Basque in fact is _nothing_ like any language on earth. Or is
    that the people themselves ?
