had a feckin brilliant day yesterday, went into the peak district, and
farted about riding on the little postman pat type lanes (walls either side
    of the narrow road)

went upto robin hood's cave, on the stannage edge near hathersage, sam was
suitably impressed... but rekoned it was a bit too cold for a shag in the
cave, not to mention some people were climbing up the chimnley climbing
    route next to it.

would like to see more places like that, i only knew of robin hood's cave as
we went rock climbing there at school 17 years ago, otherwise i'd never know
    of it's existance.

we'd love to find other places like that, idealy with nice riding roads upto
them, went upto chapel-en-le-firth, mam tor etc, where the roads been closed
from the landslide in '79, again that was fekin brilliant to see,

anyone got any other suggestions of places to seek out in the peak
district?? or a web site listing them?

been told there's hundereds of little caves up there, but finding them can
be hard, can't have any with too much of a walk to them as my legs are
fucked, so after the ones we can ride near then walk a little way... without
going off road illegaly... if possible.

You could try the Derbyshire Caving club or some other similar organisation.
I have in my possession a book called Caves of Derbyshire. That is to say I
did have but I've just been to my library and it's not there at the moment.
No doubt it'll come to light soon. When I find it I'll have a look and see
what I can dig out. There is a more up to date version (Caves of the Peak
District) which you can get from Caving Supplies or Amazon have the older
    version http://tinyurl.com/lq7ajv

Cheers for the replies, will get that book about the caves in derbyshire,
reminds me that somewhere i have a book 'subteranian britian' which lists
mainly man made underground things, and i'm sure there are a few of them
near where i live now that i should check out.

i'd love to do some proper caving/pot holeing, but wouldent be able to do
it, my leg joints **** up enough just in rainy weather, so having to climb
down a waterfall in a cave, or trudge waist deep through an underground
    river would be impossible.

i'm also trying to find all the nice roads i used to ride in the peak
district when i was much younger, back when i was 17 i used to go there
every weekend and ride hundereds of miles between matlock and glossop areas,
rode up some feckin steep narrow roads with switch backs reminiscient of
    swiss alpine passes,

i've ridden snake pass a few times again, taken sam along that road off the
cat and fiddle that's only open to vehicles in one direction and after 5pm,
i think i need to be in the buxton area for the best roads/sights??

i'd love to find the road i have only found once, where it's got an S bend
in it, double height armco barriers as theres a steep drop into a gorge, and
just after the S bend you can park up in a layby, and there's a cave
entrance visable from the road, not very deep, but there's a few more around
    there in the rocks,
i vowed to go back and explore properly, but never noted where i was.

anyhoo, my e-mail is gazz AT kampenwagen DOT co DOT uk

I'm sure there's stuff up there that doesn't require switching to explorer
mode. If you're ever down the Glos neck of the woods I could find a couple
    down here.

Simply using a search engine would give him the following:

    http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php

Posting there would almost certainly put him in touch with either a
caving club or an individual willing to give up an afternoon.

If he wants to do it the hard way then buying a guide book, finding a
pair of old overalls and hiring a lamp, helmet etc will get him into a
cave but there aren't that many caves in the Peak District where you
can go for a wander without having to exert yourself a bit.

It's worth noting that the grades given in guide books assume that
the person entering the cave is a competent caver (or accompanied by
one) and what's described as an easy grade I could be a minor epic for
someone who's never been in a cave before. I used to be a member of
the CRO and there's nothing more certain to wind up the rescue team
than being called out at 9pm on a Saturday evening to find someone who
decided to try caving and ended up getting 'lost' 5 minutes from the
    entrance.

well, i say 'i'd love to do some proper caving' but i'm sure i put i can't,
so no point joining a caving club then i cant physicaly climb down a wire
ladder, last did some rock climbing when i was 15, nowadays i have trouble
with stairs on a bad day.

so there's no way i'd be going into a cave further than i can see from the
entrance, and it it needs more than a walk i wont bother,

was also after other things but caves that are interesting up there,

found a few websites that give suggested roads to drive/ride, but they all
seem to focus on stopping off at a pub every 5 miles, and pubs seem to be
the sights to see, with the occasional natural wonder so to speak thrown in
    when it can't be avoided,

arent there more scenic roads like the cat and fiddle and snake pass?
