Pipex Newsservers...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Ginge, Mar 1, 2005.

  1. Í looked at them - the deals are good, but they are capped for
bandwidth (they are cheap because like most ISP's they use the
bandwidth based charging model and not the subscriber based one). They
recently slung some people off their 'unlimited' accounts for excessive
    use.

Plusnet claim that their unlimited account is not uncapped - they just
don't tell you what the cap is.

  2. Does that cost more?

Their website says (in the FAQ section):

As ADSL is always on, do I get a Static IP address?

To offer the most secure service possible, all PIPEX ADSL solutions
operate on a Dynamic IP basis by default. This means that each time you
connect to the Internet you are allocated a new IP address.

Except I don't have another server, on another line... And work policy
dictates I can't host anything there.
    Easy given connectivity and kit.

Still, it's not all bad based on 20 min downtimes..

Last year I lost connectivity 7 times, the worst of which was 37 hours,
but BT's exchange got hit by lightening... I suppose that's an excuse.

So basically, their service works pretty well, but you slate them. Perhaps
its a sign of the times that a company gets good ratings for doing what they
    say they will.

FWIW, i've been with zen over 2 years, and its been down twice (both due to
BT) in that time. Back up again very quickly and their technical people seem
to know what they're talking about. Only gripe is that support isn't 24/7.

Why not try force9 - if you're not bothered about limited monthly
    bandwidth then they're doing 2mb for 15.99 I think (2gb limit).

Nice idea, but with working from home frequently I can transfer several
hundred Mb a day, so would hit 1-2Gb every week, and it'd be
    uneconomical.

    I want uncapped.

Bandwidth is less of a bother, 512K / 1M is plenty, the machines don't
    get switched off.

BTW, do you know of any booze that's guaranteed to get a shag?[1]

Well, I don't use their news server. But for general use, i find it fine.
They don't *force* you to buy their stuff.

Personally, if I was going to be
Like who? I'm genuinely interested btw.

  11. Nor do I - I use the one supplied for free by the firm that I buy the
    domains through (freeparking).

Not that you need to - anyone sending email will think it's gone to you
OK, and their sending server will keep retrying for 7 days.
Which is eminently sensible of them.
Quite a good one. Nothing so exciting round here.

  12. I've only moved to Zen in the last month or so - news server seems fine
(if you aren't bothered about binaries - as I'm not). Customer service
(the one time I spoke to them) were polite and answered the phone
promptly. What more do you want?

  13. Yep - I do a bit of sharepoint hosting for a club I'm in and affordable
!M SDSL would be just ticketyboo.

  14. I've not seen any shonkyness on their news server - every post in this
group that appears on NIN appears on Zen fairly quickly.

Their service is far better than Nildram were or Demon for that matter.
Dunno about the hardware prices as ISPs are always pricey for hardware
so I don't buy from them on principle.

Not arguing, but I would (thus far) rate them as quite cluefull.

  16. Fair enough - I didn't pick up on the binary bit. I won't start on how
inappropriate a medium for binaries netnews really is...
I always find that with tech support, so don't ring them. Ask a mate -
    it's for the best.

  19. I won't be taking it to the BOSM then ;o)
Aye, and it's cheap. If I look in the skip round the back they may have
an expensive looking bottle I can decant it into.
Cor yeah. Sometimes I don't realise how bad the smell is until I leave
the room and then go back in again.

I understand from Tech SUpp that 1Mb customers will be upgraded to 2Mb "in
March" at no extra cost, otherwise I would be moving too. As for limits
(other replies to the original post) I understand I have a 10Gb limit on the
new newserver only (which hasn't been a problem despite the fact that I do
subscribe to some binaries) and am uncapped on other downloads. I have the
Business 500 account that costs around £25pm.
The new newserver nntp is very good as it had a wider spread of groups that
the standard pipex ones, for those less well known groups that you may
    asprire to.
