again have to come to your rescue, to explain phenomena that should be
obvious. At least, if i) you've ever been in the US and ii) you are
capable of reason and/or philosophy.

The United States is essentially a masculine society. The notion of
'virility' is everywhere, from the II Amendment all the way down (or 'up')
to the huge cars that they favour. You can see it; you can _feel_ it
driving around or walking. The raw power of the country is everywhere. In
addition, the military industrial complex has resulted in a glorification
of violence and of the armed forces, and violence is traditionally
(although not exclusively) the reserve of heterosexual men. Finally, the
rejection of intellectualism and what for want of a better expression I
shall call 'emotion' (as exemplified for example by Rousseau's
_Confessions_ or by Byron or Keats) means that any man who does not espouse
the above characteristics is viewed with suspicion.

I recall (anecdote alert) being in a pub with a distant family member (Noo
Joisey _circa_ 1998), and telling him that I oppose the death penalty. He
looked at me and said, 'and I suppose you like men, too?'
